Nigerian singer Mr Eazi believes becoming a billionaire in US dollars could be closer than many people think, but he is not making the pursuit of wealth the centre of his career.
The singer discussed his financial standing during an interview in which he was asked about the possibility of becoming the first Afrobeats artist to attain billionaire status.
When the conversation turned to the currency, Mr Eazi made it clear that the answer depended on whether they were talking about naira or dollars.
Asked about his wealth in naira, he confirmed his billionaire status with a simple response: “Billionaire.”
The interviewer then shifted the discussion to US dollars, and Mr Eazi replied, “US dollars, you know, soon come.”
His response suggested that he believes reaching that financial milestone is possible in the near future. However, he was quick to explain that becoming a billionaire is not necessarily what he is working towards.
“I’m not really looking for, that’s not the target,” he said, adding that it could happen “anytime now.”
Rather than focusing solely on how much money he can accumulate, Mr Eazi placed greater importance on being able to control his creative direction and release music without restrictions.
“Freedom very big to me. Freedom musically, freedom to be able to put out music freely.”
For the singer, that freedom is an important part of his career. His interests also extend beyond music, with investments forming part of his business activities.
During the interview, the interviewer brought up his stake in a UK ticketing company, prompting a discussion about his business ventures and his position as an entertainer with interests outside the recording studio.
The conversation also touched on American rapper Jay-Z, who has combined a successful music career with major business interests. When asked whether he could be regarded as Africa's Jay-Z, Mr Eazi was open to the comparison.
“You have Africa’s Jay-Z, you know, you could do that.”
The comparison did not end with business and music. The singer also brought their relationships into the conversation, referring to Jay-Z's marriage to Beyoncé and his own relationship with Temi Otedola.
“Jay-Z is Jay-Z. I’m Mr. Eazi. Mr. Eazi has Beyonce, I have Temi.”
The comment added a playful moment to the discussion, with Mr Eazi drawing a distinction between the two men while acknowledging the comparison.
His remarks offer a glimpse into how he approaches success. Although he appears confident that becoming a US dollar billionaire could be within reach, he does not present it as the ultimate measure of his achievements.
Instead, his comments point to a broader ambition: building a successful career and business interests while retaining the independence to make music on his own terms.
For Mr Eazi, the financial milestone may come with time, but the freedom to decide what happens to his music remains a priority.
