Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Jide Kosoko has opened up about a costly filmmaking experience that left him financially indebted after a cinema release failed to generate enough revenue to cover its production expenses.

Jide Kosoko disclosed that he spent more than N300 million on the project, but the money generated from its theatrical run was insufficient to repay those who contributed financially to bring the film to life.

The veteran actor shared the experience during an interview on the African A List podcast, explaining how a project that required substantial financial backing eventually became a burden rather than a profitable venture.

According to Jide Kosoko, the production was financed with contributions from individuals who believed in the project and supported his efforts to make the movie.

However, the film's performance at the cinema did not meet expectations, leaving him unable to recover the amount invested.

He explained that the revenue generated from ticket sales was distributed among the people involved, further reducing the amount available to offset the production costs.

The actor said the outcome left him in debt despite the considerable sum invested in the project.

Jide Kosoko's revelation highlights the financial risks associated with producing movies for theatrical release in Nigeria, where substantial production budgets do not always translate into corresponding box-office earnings.

Filmmakers often commit significant resources to production, marketing and distribution in the hope that cinema audiences will deliver enough revenue to make their investments worthwhile.

However, when a film underperforms, recovering the money spent can become difficult, particularly when several contributors are expecting returns.

For Jide Kosoko, whose career spans decades, the experience demonstrates that longevity and experience in the entertainment industry do not necessarily guarantee financial success with every production.

The actor is one of Nollywood's established figures, having worked extensively as an actor, filmmaker and director.

He is recognised for his contributions to both Yoruba-language and English-language productions, earning a reputation as one of the industry's enduring talents.

Beyond conventional storytelling, Jide Kosoko has also participated in historical film projects. One notable example is Eleko, which explores the life of Oba Esugbayi Eleko and his resistance to British colonial authority in Lagos.

His latest account provides an insight into the challenges that can accompany ambitious film projects, particularly those requiring hundreds of millions of naira in financing.

Although cinema releases offer filmmakers an opportunity to reach wider audiences and generate significant returns, Jide Kosoko's experience illustrates how unpredictable box-office performance can be.

His disclosure also draws attention to the importance of financial planning, realistic revenue projections and effective distribution strategies when undertaking expensive film productions.

For industry professionals and aspiring filmmakers, the experience serves as a reminder that even established names can encounter substantial financial setbacks when a movie fails to perform as anticipated.
