Nigerian comedian and actor Samuel Perry, popularly known as Broda Shaggi, has revealed that he feared his entertainment career was over after sustaining a gunshot injury that kept him away from work for months.
The entertainer opened up about the frightening experience in a YouTube video published on Wednesday night, recounting the pain, uncertainty and emotional struggles he faced following the incident in March 2026.
Broda Shaggi was reportedly hit by a stray bullet while filming a comedy skit beneath a bridge in Sango-Ota, Ogun State, on a Sunday afternoon.
At the time, a police source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly, confirmed that the comedian had sustained a gunshot injury. The Ogun State Police Command initially said it could not confirm whether the incident occurred within its jurisdiction, while its spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continued.
Comedian recounts terrifying experience
Speaking about the incident, Broda Shaggi said he had been working on a routine brand activation when he was struck by the bullet.
He explained that he lost consciousness and was bleeding heavily before receiving medical attention, adding that he could barely remember how he arrived at the hospital.
“I was totally unconscious till I got to the hospital. So I didn’t even know how we got there. But one thing I could remember was me praying till we got to the first hospital where first aid was administered,” he said.
Describing his condition immediately after the shooting, the comedian recalled feeling overwhelmed by fear and desperately wanting reassurance from medical personnel.
“A lot was happening at the same time. I was sweating. I was holding my leg, you know, I was seeing blood, and all I wanted to hear was a doctor or a nurse telling me Samuel, you’ll be fine,” he added.
Broda Shaggi feared losing his career
Beyond the physical pain, the comedian said one of his biggest concerns was whether he would ever return to performing.
He explained that dancing, singing, drumming and other physical activities were important parts of his comedy performances, making the injury particularly frightening.
The possibility that he might no longer be able to move freely or entertain audiences left him uncertain about his professional future.
According to him, he had maintained an intense work schedule since 2018, moving constantly between writing scripts, filming skits, recording music and travelling for engagements.
“Since 2018 till date, I never rest. It’s always back-to-back. If I’m not writing I’m shooting. If I’m not shooting, I’m in the studio making music. If I’m not making music, I’m travelling for something,” he said.
The prolonged break also made him worry that audiences might forget him while he was away from the entertainment scene.
Watching colleagues perform made him emotional
Broda Shaggi disclosed that seeing videos of his colleagues working and entertaining audiences sometimes left him emotional because he did not know whether he would regain his former abilities.
“There were moments where I would see videos of my colleagues. I would laugh, and sometimes I would start to cry because I wasn’t sure if I would still be able to do all these things they’re doing again,” he said.
Despite his fears, the comedian tried to remain creatively active during his hospitalisation by writing and starting a YouTube series.
However, he admitted that he continued to struggle with uncertainty about his recovery and future prospects.
Surgery, physiotherapy aid recovery
The entertainer revealed that he underwent surgery in Nigeria before receiving further treatment and physiotherapy.
About four months after the incident, he travelled to Dubai for additional medical care, which he said significantly improved his condition.
According to him, he was able to stand with support on the second day of treatment and began walking with crutches the following day.
Reflecting on the shooting, Broda Shaggi expressed gratitude that the bullet struck his hip rather than his head or another vital organ.
“It was a stray bullet, and it came this way to my hip. What if it had come this way and hit my head or hit any vital organ?” he asked.
Actor promises return with new projects
Although he still uses crutches, Broda Shaggi said his mobility had improved considerably compared with the early days of his recovery.
“I’m still using my crutches for now. But there was a period where I couldn’t move without the two crutches. I couldn’t even put my leg on the floor, you know. But now I can walk. I can stand alone without crutches, but I still have to support myself with the crutches,” he explained.
Describing his survival as a second chance, the comedian expressed gratitude for being alive and promised fans new projects.
“I’m grateful to be alive. It’s a second chance. You should also be grateful to have Shaggi back on your screen because right now I’m coming with exciting projects,” he said.
