Veteran Nollywood actor Hanks Anuku has called on Nigerians to give President Bola Tinubu more time to address the country’s challenges, arguing that the problems confronting Nigeria did not begin under the current administration.
Anuku made the remarks while appearing on The Honest Bunch podcast, where he spoke about Tinubu’s leadership and urged Nigerians to remain patient with the President’s Renewed Hope agenda.
The actor said the country had faced difficulties under previous administrations and that Tinubu inherited some of the challenges currently affecting Nigerians.
“Nigeria has to be patient for the renewed hope of this man, Tinubu, and the country was not spoiled by him,” Anuku said.
“There were people there before him now. Why didn’t they go and attack those people? He has to fix it now. He’s doing great. Nigeria should be patient.”
Anuku argued that Nigerians were expecting solutions too quickly despite the scale of the issues confronting the country. He said the President should be given enough time to implement his plans and address problems that existed before he assumed office.
“We’re in too much of a hurry,” the actor said.
The actor also expressed support for Tinubu completing his tenure, suggesting that Nigerians should not assume that a future administration would necessarily perform better.
According to Anuku, the President should be allowed to serve his term and Nigerians should judge his performance within the time available to him.
“He has to serve his term, his tenure,” he said.
“How many people can be better than him because he’s this and that? Most people who are going to come, maybe after, maybe they’re even worse off.”
Anuku’s comments reflect his personal position on the administration amid ongoing public criticism of the government and debates over the country’s economic and social challenges.
The actor also rejected suggestions that he was receiving money to publicly defend or support Tinubu. He insisted that his position was based on his personal conviction rather than any financial arrangement.
“No one pays me,” he said.
Anuku further declared that he remained personally supportive of the President despite the criticism directed at the administration.
“I’m going to be hanging out with Mr President himself. There’s nothing you can do about that,” he said.
Beyond politics, the veteran actor used the podcast appearance to discuss some difficult experiences he has faced in his personal life.
Anuku spoke about the death of the mother of his children, describing the experience as painful and revealing that he went through a period of depression following her death.
“When I lost my woman, you know, mother of my children, it’s deep, and it hurts. I was depressed a bit,” he said.
He explained that the experience contributed to a period when he became isolated from others. According to him, his faith eventually helped him regain his footing during the difficult period.
The actor also alleged that some people he considered friends betrayed him when he was vulnerable.
“Some friends betrayed me as well. Some want you dead. Some even want you to go mad and all that,” he said.
Anuku has previously rejected claims about his mental state following the circulation of videos online that generated speculation about his wellbeing. He said at the time that the reports had negatively affected his reputation and career.
His latest comments therefore combine his views on Nigeria’s political situation with reflections on some of the personal challenges he has experienced.
While urging Nigerians to be patient with Tinubu, Anuku maintained that the President inherited problems that had existed before his administration and should be given time to pursue his agenda.
