Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has shed light on the difficult journey of her colleague, Funke Akindele, before she became one of the most recognised figures in the Nigerian film industry.

The veteran actress made this known during a masterclass organised by filmmaker Femi Adebayo at his newly established media hub, Euphoria 360, where she spoke about the importance of perseverance and determination in building a successful career.

According to Bimbo Akintola, Funke Akindele spent several years trying to establish herself in the entertainment industry but struggled to get opportunities to demonstrate her abilities.

She explained that the filmmaker initially worked in the English-speaking section of Nollywood but did not receive the recognition she deserved despite her years of involvement in the industry.

Bimbo Akintola noted that rather than allowing rejection to discourage her, Funke Akindele remained committed to her ambitions and eventually explored opportunities in the Yoruba movie industry.

Her decision to expand her involvement in Yoruba productions, both as an actress and filmmaker, eventually opened new doors for her.

The veteran actress identified the release of Jenifa as a major turning point in Funke Akindele's career, explaining that the project introduced her to a much wider audience and transformed her into a household name.

She also cautioned aspiring actors and filmmakers against comparing their beginnings with Funke Akindele's current achievements without understanding the years of hard work and disappointments that preceded her success.

Bimbo Akintola's comments have brought renewed attention to the challenges Funke Akindele experienced while building her career.

The filmmaker had previously spoken about the discrimination she encountered because of her physical appearance during her early years in Nollywood.

She recalled how the experience affected her confidence on a movie set before actresses Iyabo Ojo and Sikiratu Sindodo reportedly intervened in her defence.

Funke Akindele has also acknowledged the contributions of people who supported her career at different stages, while maintaining that her achievements ultimately came through God's grace and personal determination.

At the 2025 Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MIPAN) gathering, she reiterated that her success was not handed to her by anyone.

The actress, who celebrated 27 years in the entertainment industry last year, has frequently encouraged young people to remain focused despite rejection.

She has consistently maintained that her journey involved learning, hard work, prayers and the willingness to reconsider her strategies whenever necessary.

Today, Funke Akindele is recognised as one of Nollywood's leading actresses and filmmakers, with several successful productions to her credit.
