Nigerian singer Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, has shared her perspective on relationships, saying she would rather end a serious relationship than remain with a partner after developing stronger feelings for someone else.
The “Rush” singer made this known while responding to a woman seeking advice about her relationship on the Ask Ayra Starr show.
Addressing the dilemma, Ayra Starr explained that if she were in a committed relationship and became attracted to another man, she would choose to end her existing relationship instead of attempting to maintain romantic relationships with both men.
According to the singer, making such a decision would allow her to be honest with herself and the people involved rather than creating a situation where multiple people could be hurt.
“If I’m in a serious relationship with a guy and then I find another guy more attractive, I would break up with him instead of dating both of them at the same time. I don’t think you can love two people.. I think you need time to yourself so you can figure it out,” she said.
Ayra Starr’s advice centred on the importance of understanding one’s emotions before making major decisions in a relationship. Rather than immediately moving from one relationship into another, she suggested that taking time away from romantic commitments could help an individual determine what they genuinely want.
For the singer, ending one relationship before pursuing another is a more straightforward approach than attempting to balance two romantic relationships at the same time.
Her comments also touched on the need for people to maintain their individuality while in romantic relationships.
Responding to another question on the show, Ayra Starr advised people not to abandon their friends simply because they have found a romantic partner.
She stressed that friendships should continue to have a place in a person’s life even after they enter a serious relationship.
According to her, falling in love should not mean cutting off existing friendships or allowing a romantic partner to determine who a person can maintain relationships with.
“You should never abandon your friends because you are in love. Your partner should not isolate you from your friends because you are in a relationship. They should be a balance between friendship and relationship in love,” the singer added.
Ayra Starr’s comments highlight two different aspects of maintaining healthy relationships: being honest about changing feelings and preserving meaningful connections outside romance.
While romantic relationships can become an important part of a person’s life, her advice suggests that individuals should not lose their friendships or personal identity in the process.
The singer also warned against isolation within romantic relationships, noting that a partner should not prevent their significant other from maintaining friendships.
Her position comes as relationship conversations continue to attract attention on social media, with many people sharing different opinions on commitment, attraction and maintaining friendships after entering a serious relationship.
For Ayra Starr, the decision to remain in a relationship should be based on genuine feelings, while honesty should guide situations where those feelings change.
Her advice also places emphasis on taking time to understand personal emotions before making another romantic commitment.
Rather than encouraging people to remain in relationships simply because they have already invested time in them, the singer advocated making honest decisions when circumstances change.
At the same time, she encouraged people to maintain a healthy balance between their romantic partners and friends, stressing that one should not have to disappear from their social circle simply because they have fallen in love.
