Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has weighed in on the changing nature of fame and relevance in the entertainment industry, arguing that artists can no longer rely on mystery and absence to maintain public interest.

The music star shared his thoughts during an interview with Selah Meditate, where he discussed the growing importance of visibility and the changing relationship between entertainers and their audiences.

Kcee noted that the entertainment industry has evolved significantly in recent years, particularly with the rapid growth of social media and artificial intelligence. According to him, strategies that previously helped artists build anticipation may no longer produce the same results in today’s highly competitive environment.

The singer specifically questioned the long-term relevance of maintaining a mysterious public image. He argued that deliberately staying away from the public eye may eventually make it harder for artists to remain connected to their fans and maintain their position in an industry that is constantly changing.

Kcee explained that the idea of creating value by being absent was once effective, particularly around 2021 and 2022. During that period, artists could limit their appearances and public interactions, allowing anticipation to build around their music and personalities.

However, he believes the situation has changed considerably.

“The mysterious factor won’t be relevant in five years. I spoke with some professors in America, and they confirmed it. AI can now do what we are doing. Absence used to create value in 2021–2022, but things have changed. Artists need to be in people’s faces,” he stated.

His comments suggest that musicians may need to adopt a more deliberate approach to maintaining their presence, particularly at a time when audiences have access to entertainers through several digital platforms.

Social media has made it possible for artists to communicate directly with fans, promote new releases, share aspects of their personalities and participate in conversations beyond their music. As a result, maintaining a consistent presence can help artists remain part of the public conversation.

For Kcee, simply releasing music may no longer be enough to guarantee sustained attention. Artists must also find ways to remain visible and engage their audiences in an industry where new talents and new forms of entertainment emerge regularly.

The singer also linked his argument to the advancement of artificial intelligence. He pointed out that AI is increasingly capable of performing tasks that were previously associated with human creativity and entertainment.

The rapid development of AI has already generated conversations about its potential impact on music, content creation and other creative industries. Kcee’s comments add another dimension to the debate by suggesting that artists may need to be even more present and recognisable as technology continues to change how audiences consume entertainment.

He further encouraged musicians to embrace a more extroverted approach to their careers instead of deliberately withdrawing from public attention.

His position reflects a broader shift in the entertainment landscape, where an artist’s relationship with fans can extend far beyond songs and performances. Interviews, social media posts, live appearances, collaborations and other forms of engagement have become important tools for maintaining visibility.

At the same time, Kcee’s argument does not necessarily suggest that artists must reveal every aspect of their private lives. Rather, his emphasis is on maintaining enough public presence to ensure that audiences continue to remember and engage with an artist.

The singer’s remarks have therefore sparked an important conversation about whether the traditional strategy of mystery still works in an era dominated by instant information and constant digital interaction.

As the music industry continues to evolve, artists are increasingly faced with the challenge of balancing privacy with visibility. While some entertainers have successfully maintained carefully controlled public images, others have embraced frequent engagement with their audiences.

For Kcee, the future belongs to artists who understand the importance of staying present and adapting to the changing demands of the industry.

With social media, artificial intelligence and audience behaviour continuing to reshape entertainment, his message is clear: artists who want to remain relevant may need to ensure they do not disappear from the public conversation.
