Nigerian music video director TG Omori has opened up about the financial burden associated with treating kidney failure, revealing that patients undergoing regular dialysis could spend hundreds of thousands of naira every week.
Omori made the disclosure during a recent interview on the Afropolitan podcast, which aired on September 23, 2026. The filmmaker reflected on his personal experience with kidney failure and the expenses he encountered while receiving dialysis and awaiting a transplant.
According to the music video director, the cost of dialysis varies significantly depending on the hospital. He explained that a single session can cost between N50,000 and N70,000 at some hospitals, while the private facility where he received treatment charged considerably more.
Omori said each dialysis session at the private facility cost between N150,000 and N200,000, placing a significant financial burden on patients who require the treatment regularly.
Dialysis Can Cost Hundreds Of Thousands Weekly
Explaining the frequency of the treatment, Omori said patients dealing with kidney failure may need to undergo dialysis three times every week.
Based on the figures he provided, that could push the weekly cost of treatment to between N500,000 and N600,000, depending on the facility and the amount charged per session.
“So, a minimum-wage person is dead already on one session,” Omori said.
The filmmaker’s comments highlight the financial pressure faced by people who require long-term dialysis, particularly those who do not have substantial savings or other financial support.
For patients waiting for a kidney transplant, the treatment can continue for months, meaning the cost can accumulate into millions of naira.
Omori estimated that someone who remains on dialysis for approximately one year while waiting for a transplant could spend as much as N31m.
Medical Expenses Go Beyond Dialysis
The music video director stressed that the estimated N31m does not cover every expense associated with kidney failure treatment.
He noted that patients may also have to pay for medical tests, medication and other expenses that could arise from complications during treatment.
This means the actual financial requirement for someone managing kidney failure could be considerably higher than the cost of dialysis alone.
Omori’s experience gave him a different perspective on financial security, particularly the importance of having enough resources when faced with a serious medical condition.
The filmmaker explained that although money cannot guarantee happiness, having access to financial resources can make a significant difference when someone is battling a life-threatening illness.
‘N1m Salary Can’t Serve You’
Omori further explained that even someone earning N1m monthly could struggle to meet the cost of regular dialysis.
“So, automatically, if your salary is even one million naira a month, it can’t serve you,” he said.
His statement was based on the amount required for dialysis alone, with additional expenses such as medication and medical tests potentially placing further pressure on a patient’s finances.
The revelation also illustrates the challenges faced by people who need continuous medical care while trying to maintain their normal lives and financial responsibilities.
For Omori, the experience has changed how he views money and its role in dealing with serious health challenges.
He acknowledged that wealth does not necessarily guarantee happiness, but said having money can provide access to resources and treatment that may buy a person more time while dealing with a critical illness.
“Even though money can’t buy happiness, money can still buy some time,” Omori said.
