Nigerian singer and entertainer Sexy Steel has recalled some of the decisions he made early in his career, including walking away from a major brand opportunity because of his personal stance on alcohol.
According to him, alcohol and smoking have never been part of his lifestyle. He said this was also the reason he turned down a Guinness ambassadorial offer that was reportedly worth N17 million about two decades ago.
For Sexy Steel, the decision was not simply about the money involved. He said he was not willing to promote or drink alcohol, even when the offer came with a significant financial reward.
He also spoke about how his journey in entertainment took him from leaving the comfort of his wealthy family background to finding his own path. Rather than depending on his father’s wealth, he said he chose to hustle and build something for himself.
That journey eventually brought him into contact with Bred, who introduced him to Davido. Sexy Steel said his meeting with Davido happened around the period when the singer was working on what would become one of his early hit records, Dami Duro.
According to Sexy Steel, the beat being worked on at the time was actually intended for him. He further claimed that Davido had also mentioned the story during a livestream with content creator Carterefe.
His account gives another perspective on the early relationships and opportunities surrounding some of the music that later became significant in Nigerian pop culture.
While recalling those moments, Sexy Steel said:
“I’ve never taken alcohol all my life, I have never smoked all my life, I left my rich dad to hustle & I met Bred & he took me to meet Davido, when I went to meet Davido he was recording Dami Duro, the beats Davido made for Dami Duro was meant for me, He even said it on Carterefe livestream too.
I rejected 17M naira 20years ago when I was offered to be a brand ambassador for guiness & drink Alcohol but I refused”
His story brings together two different parts of his career: the choices he made personally and the connections he formed while trying to establish himself in the entertainment industry.
The N17 million offer, in particular, stands out because of how different the value of such a deal would be today. At the time, however, Sexy Steel said the financial incentive was not enough to make him change his position on alcohol.
His recollection also places his meeting with Davido within an important period in the latter’s early career, when Dami Duro was being developed.
For Sexy Steel, the story is ultimately about a path he chose for himself from stepping away from his family’s wealth to pursuing entertainment on his own terms, while maintaining personal boundaries that he says have remained unchanged over the years.
