Nollywood actor Saidi Balogun has praised the Chief Imam of Ilaro, Sheikh Muhammad Tajudeen Mustapha Adewunmi, for his decision to return N25 million that had been entrusted to him by the late Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
The money was reportedly given to the cleric by Ogogo before his death, with the intention of using it for the renovation of his grandfather’s house in Ilaro, Ogun State. Following the actor’s passing, the Chief Imam ensured that the funds were returned to members of Ogogo’s family.
The family confirmed receiving the money during the eighth-day Fidau prayer organised in honour of the late actor in Ilaro on August 31.
Reacting to the development, Balogun described the Chief Imam as a person worthy of emulation. He commended the cleric for choosing honesty and accountability despite having access to a substantial amount of money.
According to Saidi Balogun, the decision demonstrated strong character and commitment to religious values. He also recalled the Imam’s previous act of integrity while serving as Amir Hajj, a position in which he led Ogun State Muslim pilgrims to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
Saidi Balogun noted that the cleric had similarly returned unused funds to the Ogun State government after the pilgrimage, describing the latest development as another example of his commitment to doing what is right.
The clarification from the Chief Imam also helped settle questions surrounding the purpose of the money. He explained that Ogogo had contacted him while receiving treatment and entrusted the funds to him for the renovation project involving his grandfather’s property.
Rather than using the money for another purpose, the cleric preserved it until after Ogogo’s death and subsequently handed it over to the actor’s children and other members of the family.
Ogogo died on August 23, 2026, at the age of 66, following a battle with stage four cancer. His death was met with widespread mourning across the Yoruba entertainment industry, where he was respected for his contributions as an actor, producer, director and screenwriter.
He was laid to rest in Ilaro on August 24 in accordance with Islamic traditions.
Saidi Balogun’s comments have also drawn attention to the importance of integrity, particularly when handling money or property entrusted to an individual. His praise for the Chief Imam highlights how acts of honesty can leave a lasting impression, especially during difficult moments for a grieving family.
The incident has since become another notable part of the tributes surrounding Ogogo’s death, with colleagues, friends and admirers continuing to remember his contribution to Yoruba cinema.
