A joyous family celebration reportedly turned into a frightening ordeal after gunmen abd^cted a newlywed couple and four other people along a route linking communities around the Kwara-Kogi-Ekiti border.

The victims, identified as Rev. Abiodun David and his wife, Funmilayo Bamidele, were reportedly on their way back after attending their traditional engagement ceremony in Eruku, Kwara State, on Saturday evening, September 26, 2026.

According to the account of the incident, the group had been travelling in a vehicle that was expected to pass through the Isanlu route. However, the journey reportedly took an unexpected turn after the driver diverted through a less-used road in an effort to drop the best man and some of the other passengers at Iyamoye in Kogi State.

It was during this diversion that the vehicle reportedly came under attack.

The gunmen were said to have intercepted the vehicle along the Iyemero-Eruku axis, close to the boundaries linking Kwara, Kogi and Ekiti states. The attackers subsequently took the occupants away, leaving relatives and concerned residents waiting for information about their whereabouts.

The incident has reportedly heightened concern in communities around the border corridor, where movement between the three states can involve isolated roads and difficult terrain.

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed that an abduction had taken place and disclosed that security personnel had begun efforts to locate the victims and pursue those responsible.

Following the attack, security agencies reportedly expanded their search beyond the immediate location of the incident. Soldiers and other security operatives were deployed as part of the ongoing operation aimed at tracing the abducted persons and securing their safe release.

The vehicle in which the victims were travelling was later recovered in Ayetoro, Ekiti State. According to the information available, the vehicle was found close to an abandoned police station, providing investigators with another location to examine as the search continued.

Police and other security personnel from Kwara, Kogi and Ekiti states are reportedly working together in the rescue effort because of the cross-border nature of the incident.

For the families of those abducted, however, the search has been accompanied by uncertainty, as the whereabouts of the six victims remained unknown in the latest account provided.

The abduction is particularly distressing because it reportedly occurred shortly after the newlywed couple had participated in their traditional engagement ceremony. What should have been a memorable family occasion was instead followed by an emergency involving the couple and four other people travelling with them.

Security authorities are expected to continue combing surrounding areas and gathering information that could help establish the movement of the victims and identify the perpetrators.

As the joint operation involving personnel from the three affected states continues, attention remains focused on the safe recovery of Rev. Abiodun David, Funmilayo Bamidele and the four other abducted persons.
