Nollywood veteran actor Peter Fatomilola has urged his colleagues to speak up about their health challenges before their conditions become severe, following the death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
Fatomilola made the appeal while speaking about the death of Hassan in an interview with African A-List, describing the late actor as his child in the industry and a good man.
The veteran actor expressed regret that he was unaware of Hassan’s health condition until his family publicly appealed for help.
According to Fatomilola, knowing about the situation earlier would have given him an opportunity to either assist Hassan personally or seek help from people who had the expertise and resources to provide assistance.
‘Ogogo Was My Child In The Industry’
Speaking about Hassan, Fatomilola said, “Taiwo Hassan Ogogo was my child in the industry, a very good man. It’s a pity I didn’t hear anything about his health until his daughter came out to ask for help.”
The actor said he would not necessarily have needed to have the solution himself before trying to help.
He explained that even if he was unable to assist Hassan directly, he would have approached people who were more knowledgeable than him to see if something could be done.
“If I had known, and couldn’t even help, I would have sought help from people wiser than me for him,” he added.
Fatomilola Appeals To Colleagues
Fatomilola used the experience to call on other actors and members of the entertainment industry to speak openly when they become ill.
He urged them not to wait until their conditions deteriorate before informing people who may be able to assist.
“People need to come out early before sickness gets worse cos you’ll never know who can help,” he said.
His message centred on the importance of seeking help early and allowing others to know when a colleague is going through a serious health challenge.
Ogogo’s Family Sought Medical Help
Hassan’s health condition became public shortly before his death after his daughters, Kira and Lima, made emotional appeals concerning their father’s treatment.
Kira revealed in an emotional video that the actor was battling stage-four cancer and said he had been denied chemotherapy by the hospital.
She appealed to members of the public to recommend medical or traditional practitioners who could treat her father, stressing that she was not seeking financial donations.
Lima also spoke publicly about her father’s condition, saying hospitals were refusing to treat him.
Like her sister, she clarified that the family was not asking people for money but wanted a medical expert who could provide treatment.
In an emotional appeal, Lima said she did not want her father to die.
Senator Yayi Intervened
Following the appeals from Hassan’s daughters, Senator Yayi reportedly reached out to cancer specialists in an effort to secure assistance for the veteran actor.
Hassan was subsequently admitted to the operating theatre for treatment.
Before his death, the actor had also spoken about his long battle with an illness.
During an interview with Oyinmomo TV, Hassan revealed that he had battled a strange illness for seven years.
He recalled the difficulty he experienced during the period, including being unable to eat anything apart from pap.
The actor also said he moved from one place to another in search of different forms of treatment.
Hassan’s Death And Burial
Reports on Sunday, August 23, stated that Hassan had died after battling stage-four cancer. His daughter announced the sad news in a live video.
He was buried on Monday, August 24, amid tears, with several colleagues from the Nigerian film industry attending his burial.
His death prompted an outpouring of grief among colleagues and fans who remembered his contributions to Nollywood.
For Fatomilola, however, the loss has also become an opportunity to encourage entertainers to be more open about serious health challenges.
He believes early disclosure could give friends, colleagues and well-wishers more time to explore possible avenues of assistance.
His appeal is therefore for members of the industry to speak out when they fall seriously ill, rather than keeping their struggles private until their conditions become difficult to manage.
