Actress and online personality Abike Raheem, better known to fans as Papaya Ex, is dealing with heartbreak after discovering that her YouTube manager took down her film, The Spotlight, wiping out a project that had racked up 2.7 million views and drawn more than 10,000 comments from viewers.
For Papaya Ex, the setback carries extra weight because of what she says she sacrificed to bring the movie to life. According to her, she committed to a 30-day fast while the project was in production, a personal sacrifice she now feels was rendered meaningless by the deletion.
Venting online, she described the situation as devastating, saying her manager had effectively undone months of effort by taking down a movie that had already built a large audience and generated thousands of comments, adding that the fasting she undertook for the project made the loss even harder to accept.
The Spotlight debuted on August 14 and stars Papaya Ex alongside actors Michael Dappa and Ada Uli. The story centers on Dayo, an upcoming musician chasing his big break in a tough industry, a romance-driven plot that clearly resonated given the numbers it pulled before being taken offline.
This isn't the first controversy tied to the film. Weeks earlier, Papaya Ex had already gone public with frustration after learning that television stations in Ghana were airing The Spotlight without her permission, calling out the stations directly in a post dated August 16.
Days later, on August 18, she again addressed her audience, this time clarifying questions fans had raised about whether the movie was still accessible on YouTube.
Beyond her presence on social media, Papaya Ex has been steadily building a name for herself in Nollywood. Her jump into cinema came last year when she featured in Eniola Ajao's Owambe Thieves, marking the start of a run of acting roles that have followed since.
As of now, there's no word from her YouTube manager addressing the accusation or explaining why the film was removed, leaving fans and the actress herself without clarity on what happens next for the movie or the channel.
