One Gidi Night: A Lagos Thriller Driven by Desperation

James Abinibi’s One Gidi Night takes audiences into a tense and unpredictable night in Lagos, following an ordinary dispatch rider whose routine work quickly turns into a dangerous struggle for survival. 

The thriller, written, directed and produced by Abinibi, was released in Nigerian cinemas on September 11, 2026, with FilmOne Entertainment handling its distribution.

The film features Gabriel Afolayan in the lead role, supported by Uzor Arukwe, Wumi Toriola, Idia Aisien, Kelvin Ikeduba and Ibrahim Yekini. At the centre of the story is Ejiro, a legitimate dispatch rider who becomes caught up in a troubling situation created by the actions of other people. 

What begins as an ordinary assignment gradually develops into a night filled with pressure, difficult decisions and uncertainty.

Ejiro’s situation becomes even more urgent because his pregnant wife is close to giving birth, yet he finds himself unable to get to her. 

His personal crisis runs alongside the larger danger surrounding him, giving the character a clear motivation as he tries to make his way through the night.

One of the film’s notable structural choices is its real-time approach. Instead of jumping freely across different periods, the story follows the events of the night as they unfold. 

The journey moves through parts of Lagos, including Sangotedo, Awoyaya and Lakowe, making the city an important part of the film’s atmosphere and progression.

However, the review notes that some of the characters’ decisions can raise questions about their credibility. 

The flashbacks provide additional information about what happened earlier, although they sometimes function more as explanations of the story than as tools for creating a deeper emotional connection with the characters.

Performance remains one of the film’s stronger elements. Gabriel Afolayan delivers an intense performance as Ejiro, particularly during the physically demanding moments of the story. 

Uzor Arukwe also faces a difficult acting challenge by portraying twins, giving the two characters enough distinction to remain understandable. Wumi Toriola and Idia Aisien contribute to the supporting cast, while Ibrahim Yekini and the wider ensemble provide solid performances.

The production also benefits from its use of Lagos. The locations are not simply background scenery but help establish the movement and atmosphere of the story. 

Cinematography and editing work together to maintain the film’s real-time structure while keeping the narrative relatively clear as events move from one location to another.

At its core, One Gidi Night examines desperation, survival, conscience and the difficult choices people may make when circumstances become overwhelming. 

While the film succeeds in making viewers understand the situations facing its characters, the review argues that it does not always create the same level of emotional urgency.

Overall, One Gidi Night presents an ambitious thriller built around one dangerous night in Lagos. Its real-time storytelling, strong lead performance and use of the city give it a distinctive identity, even as some narrative and emotional limitations prevent the tension from reaching its full potential.
