Ojay Wright Names Monetary Relationship As His Biggest Culture Shock In Nigeria

For Ojay Wright, moving to Nigeria came with more than simply adjusting to a new environment. The Nigerian-American singer, who is the son of veteran actress Bukky Wright, said his experience of dating Nigerian women came with a surprise he did not expect: frequent requests for money.

Speaking about the differences he noticed after relocating, Ojay said the approach to money in his dating experiences was very different from what he was used to.

According to him, conversations could quickly move from a simple introduction to expectations around spending. He recalled finding it unusual that even an ordinary greeting could sometimes be followed by a request for money.

“Everybody just asks for money. They're always asking for money. I think that was the biggest shock for me. Cause over there people just do what they do. But over here you cannot even say hello or hi without getting billed. I haven't met someone in the first two months are not billing me.

“It's not like I wouldn't spend. But it's money, money, money here. That's the only thing everybody talks about", he said.

Ojay made the comments while discussing what dating in Nigeria has been like since his relocation. His experience, as he described it, has involved adjusting to expectations around who pays, when money is expected and how quickly financial requests can enter a new relationship.

He also made it clear that his complaint was not about spending money itself. Rather, it was the frequency with which money seemed to become part of his interactions.

For someone who had lived outside Nigeria, the difference stood out to him. He compared the experience with what he was accustomed to elsewhere, where, in his account, people could simply interact without immediately bringing money into the conversation.

That contrast became particularly noticeable during the early stages of meeting women. Ojay said he struggled to recall meeting someone during his first two months in Nigeria who did not eventually ask him for money.

His comments also point to one of the less obvious adjustments that can come with relocating to a different country. Beyond food, language, social habits and everyday life, relationships can come with their own set of expectations that may not be familiar to someone coming from another environment.

For Ojay, money appears to have been one of those unexpected differences.

Still, he stressed that he was not against spending on a woman or taking care of someone he was dating. His issue, based on his explanation, was the perception that financial requests were becoming too common and were sometimes appearing before a relationship had properly developed.

“It's not like I wouldn't spend,” he said, before emphasizing how often money came up in his interactions.

The singer's experience reflects his personal account of dating after relocating to Nigeria, rather than a description of every Nigerian woman's approach to relationships. His comments were specifically about the encounters he said he had during his time in the country.

For Ojay, what initially stood out as a culture shock became one of the clearest differences between dating in Nigeria and what he had previously known abroad.
