Nollywood Mourns As Atinuke Kareem Loses Cancer Battle

Nollywood has been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran actress Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, popularly known in the industry as Atinuke Kareem, who passed away after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.

The sad news was confirmed on Tuesday by Owolabi Ajasa, who currently serves as the governor of the Ogun State chapter of the Theater Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN). He shared the announcement through a heartfelt statement posted on his Instagram page, extending gratitude to everyone who had rallied around the late actress during her illness.

In his message, Ajasa acknowledged the outpouring of support that came from far and wide, thanking those who contributed financially, offered prayers, and provided words of encouragement throughout her treatment journey. 

Despite these collective efforts, he revealed that Atinuke ultimately succumbed to the illness, describing her passing as her having answered the final call.

He went on to reflect on the difficulty of losing a colleague to such circumstances, noting that while the community cannot question the will of God, they can only submit to it and hold onto prayer. Ajasa asked for divine mercy on her soul, praying that she finds eternal rest, while also appealing for strength for her grieving family, colleagues, and loved ones as they come to terms with the loss.

According to reports, Atinuke's passing comes roughly four months after she had publicly appealed to well-wishers and members of the public for financial assistance to help support her treatment. 

Her case, like many others in the Nigerian entertainment industry, highlighted the financial strain that comes with battling serious illnesses, often pushing artistes and their colleagues to lean on public goodwill and industry solidarity to cover the cost of medical care.

Her death adds to a string of recent losses that have rocked Nollywood in quick succession, with the industry still processing the passing of other notable figures in the entertainment space. 

These repeated losses have reignited conversations within the film community about the need for better healthcare support systems and structured welfare schemes for actors, many of whom face financial uncertainty despite their contributions to the industry over the years.

Colleagues and fans alike are expected to continue paying tribute to Atinuke in the coming days, celebrating the work and legacy she leaves behind in the Yoruba film industry. 

As details about funeral arrangements are awaited, many within TAMPAN and the wider Nollywood community are likely to organize further gestures of support for her family during this difficult period, in keeping with the tradition of solidarity often seen when the industry loses one of its own.
