Author Toni Tone has made it clear that having a big family is not something her husband can simply decide on his own.
While her husband would like them to have five children, Toni says there is a condition attached to every additional child. For her, the decision will depend largely on how he handles his responsibilities as a husband and father.
The couple, according to Toni, have already agreed on how they will approach the question of having more children. Rather than committing to a particular number from the beginning, she wants to see how things work out as their family grows.
“My husband wants five kids, and I told him, We’ve made a deal. I’ve said to him look the amount of children you have is going to correspond to your behaviour as a husband and father.”
Toni’s point is that becoming a father is not just about having children. She wants her husband to remain supportive, loving and involved as their responsibilities increase.
She explained that if he proves himself with one child, he could potentially get the opportunity to have another. But if his efforts begin to fall short, she would have no reason to continue expanding the family.
“So if you have one and you are like father of the year, I’ll give you a second. If you have two and I feel like I am queen of the world based on how you treat me and the kids, you have three.”
In other words, Toni is not looking at the number five as a guarantee. Her husband may want five children, but she says his behaviour along the way will determine whether they actually get there.
The arrangement also puts her own experience as a wife and mother at the centre of the decision. If she feels well cared for and believes her husband is doing his part at home and with the children, she is open to having more.
But there is also a clear stopping point.
Toni says she would pay attention if her husband’s effort started to decline. Once she feels that he is no longer putting in the same level of work or showing the same commitment, she would draw the line on having more children.
“I said, I’m going to cap you when your form starts slipping,” she said.
For Toni, then, five children is not simply a target her husband can work towards. Each new addition to the family comes with another test of how well he is doing as a partner and a father.
Her approach makes the decision less about a fixed number and more about the quality of family life they are building together.
