For Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar, the period she battled severe illness was one she would rather not relive. Away from the cameras and the usual activities of the movie industry, she was dealing with her health while also facing controversy that affected her relationship with some people in the industry.

Looking back at that difficult period of her illness and the controversy involving Apostle Johnson Suleman, Halima Abubakar recalled how she felt when some of her colleagues did not reach out to her. Although she said she does not consider them friends, she added that she does not blame them for believing what they had heard about her.

According to the actress, she does not see those people as friends, but she has chosen not to hold their actions against them. She believes they may have acted based on information they received from other people without hearing her own side.

She said:

“I didn’t say they abandoned me. We are not friends. You know how it is in an industry. When one person says one thing, every other person assumes that’s the truth. So, I don’t blame them.

“If somebody said something that was presumably said by me, the proper thing to do was to call me and ask me. You don’t go behind after telling me to write a report, and I write that report, you didn’t act on the report, and then you just give me an indefinite suspension.

“You didn’t visit me when I was sick, nothing. They didn’t send anybody. They just left me to die, but God said I will live.”

Her account also touched on the indefinite suspension she received. Abubakar questioned why she was asked to prepare a report if the report was not going to be considered before the decision was made against her.

Still, she does not appear interested in holding on to resentment over what happened. For her, whatever existed between herself and her colleagues is no longer something she expects either side to settle.

She stated:

“They don’t owe me anything, and I do not owe them anything.

“Someone I didn’t even expect told me this. But I’m here. God has been wonderful. You would not know that I’ve gone through what I’ve gone through. God has worked in me heavily because without God in my life, I don’t know what I would have done.”

The actress also credited her faith for helping her through the difficult period. Her words suggest that surviving the experience has given her a different perspective on the people and circumstances around her.

Even with the disappointment she felt about some of her colleagues not checking on her during her illness, Abubakar said she has not allowed the experience to erase the affection she has for them.

She acknowledged that people in the industry may sometimes hear a particular version of a story and accept it as fact, especially when several people begin repeating the same account.

“It doesn’t change the love I have for my colleagues. Sometimes, they might not know what is happening, then when one person picks a narrative, that person will run with it and tell other people. So, I don’t know what they heard. It’s okay. I don’t judge them”.

For her, the difficult chapter appears to have left her with a strong sense of gratitude for being alive and a decision not to spend her energy judging those who were not there for her when she needed them most.
