Damilola Orimogunje’s Dear Ajayi is a Nigerian drama that examines how personal limitations, family expectations and difficult circumstances can shape people’s lives.
Set in Ibadan during the late 1990s, the film follows two sisters, Ade and Titi, who find themselves living together again while caring for their sick mother. Their reunion brings different ideas about freedom, responsibility and ambition into close contact.
The film became the first Nigerian production selected for Venice Days, a section of the Venice Film Festival. It also received two awards at the festival, including the Premio Enrico Fulchignoni, presented by UNESCO, and the Premio Bisato d’Oro for Best Cast and Performances.
Bimbo Akintola plays Ade, a nurse whose life revolves around providing for her family and caring for those around her.
Her character rarely expresses her frustrations openly, with much of her emotional struggle communicated through silence and restrained behaviour.
Tosin Adeyemi portrays Titi, whose desire for independence is closely connected to her music. Although she appears more expressive than her sister, she faces pressures from the music industry, relationships and family members who do not fully understand her ambitions.
William Benson plays Michael, Ade’s husband, an artist struggling to turn his creative work into a sustainable career. His financial difficulties gradually affect his confidence and relationships.
Through its characters, Dear Ajayi presents restriction in different forms, showing how social expectations and personal circumstances can influence individual choices.
The film uses a deliberately measured pace and focuses more on everyday experiences than dramatic plot twists.
