Hollywood actor Andrew Garfield has revealed that the music and philosophy of Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti played an unexpected role in shaping his portrayal of Spider-Man.
Garfield, who played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel before returning to the character in Spider-Man: No Way Home, made the revelation in a roadside interview clip that has attracted attention online.
The actor explained that he creates a playlist whenever he takes on a new character, using music to help him understand and develop the personality he is preparing to portray. When he was cast as Spider-Man, Fela Kuti’s music became part of that process.
According to Garfield, the Nigerian musician’s distinctive rhythms helped him explore the physical side of the superhero character.
Rather than simply listening for entertainment, he found elements in Fela’s music that influenced the way he approached movement while wearing the Spider-Man suit.
Garfield said the music helped him become more connected to his body and discover a particular physical quality for the role. He also saw a connection between Fela’s commitment to social justice and aspects of Peter Parker’s character.
Fela Kuti, widely recognised as a pioneer of Afrobeat, was known for combining music with outspoken social and political commentary.
His songs frequently addressed injustice and challenged authorities, particularly during Nigeria’s military rule.
For Garfield, those qualities provided another layer of inspiration as he developed his interpretation of the Marvel superhero. He suggested that Fela’s energy and sense of purpose helped him think about how Spider-Man could express his own power and character through movement.
The actor’s comments highlight an unusual connection between Nigerian music and a major Hollywood superhero performance.
While Spider-Man is a fictional American character, Garfield found creative inspiration in the work of one of Africa’s most influential musicians.
His interpretation of Peter Parker ultimately appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. Nearly a decade later, he returned to the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The revelation has generated interest among fans, particularly because Garfield identified Fela Kuti not simply as music he enjoyed, but as an influence on the physical and emotional approach he brought to one of his most recognised roles.
