Kiekie has opened up about an experience from her working days that eventually pushed her to leave her job.
The skit maker recalled a time when she felt her salary was no longer enough for her needs. Rather than keep quiet about it, she decided to speak with her boss and ask if there was room for an increase.
What followed, however, caught her off guard.
Instead of discussing her pay or considering her request, Kiekie said her boss focused on her appearance and the fact that she appeared on television. According to her, he suggested that being a fine girl on TV could give her access to wealthy men who would be willing to give her money.
Recalling the conversation, she said:
“I once had a boss. I complained that this salary you do pay me is not sufficient, can you pay me more?.
This man told me that why are you stressing yourself?. You are a fine girl , you are on TV. Big men will see you, they give you money. That's how I sack myself on that day”.
For Kiekie, that response changed the way she viewed the job. She had approached her employer with a straightforward request about her earnings, but the answer she received made her realise that continuing in the role was no longer something she wanted to do.
The incident also showed how differently employees and employers can sometimes view the issue of pay. While Kiekie was concerned about whether her salary reflected her work and responsibilities, her boss appeared to believe that her television presence and looks could provide another way for her to make money.
Rather than accept that suggestion, she chose to leave.
Looking back at the experience, Kiekie’s account gives an insight into one of the moments that shaped her decision to move on from her former workplace. What began as a simple conversation about earning more ended with her deciding to walk away from the job altogether.
For her, that was apparently the point where she knew she had to make a different choice about her career.
