Veteran Nigerian actress Joke Silva is celebrating her 65th birthday, marking another remarkable chapter in a career that has lasted more than four decades.
Born on September 29, 1961, Silva has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s theatre, television and film industries. Throughout her career, she has appeared in a wide range of productions, working across drama, comedy, romance and historical films.
One of her notable early appearances came in the 1998 film The Secret Laughter of Women, where she starred alongside Nia Long and Colin Firth. The British-Canadian production helped introduce her talent to audiences beyond Nigeria.
She later featured in White Waters, a 2007 film in which she played Grandma. Her performance earned her the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2008.
Silva also appeared in 30 Days, playing Dupe Ajayi, before taking on the role of Kike Cole in Kunle Afolayan’s 2012 romantic comedy Phone Swap.
Her filmography continued to grow with appearances in The Royal Hibiscus Hotel, where she played Augustina, and Chief Daddy, in which she portrayed Lady Kay Beecroft. She reprised the role in Chief Daddy 2: Going for Broke in 2021.
In 2020, Silva featured in Kunle Afolayan’s Citation, playing Angela alongside Temi Otedola and Jimmy Jean-Louis. The film further demonstrated her ability to adapt to different genres and generations of actors.
She also appeared in the Netflix series Blood Sisters in 2022, playing Granny alongside Nancy Isime, Ini Dima-Okojie and Kate Henshaw.
Another significant production in her career was Elesin Oba: The King’s Horseman, the 2022 adaptation of Wole Soyinka’s acclaimed play Death and the King’s Horseman. Silva played Madam Bola in the film directed by Biyi Bandele.
In 2024, she featured in the biographical film Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, portraying the older version of the renowned activist. Kehinde Bankole played the younger Funmilayo in the film.
Across more than four decades, Silva has built a filmography that cuts across different genres and generations. Her performances have allowed her to work with some of Nigeria’s most prominent filmmakers and actors while also introducing her to newer audiences.
As she marks her 65th birthday, her collection of films reflects the remarkable longevity of her career and her continued presence in Nigerian entertainment. From The Secret Laughter of Women to Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, she has continued to take on diverse roles and remain an important figure on screen.
