Nigerian singer Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus, popularly known as Joeboy, has opened up about his views on marriage, revealing that he would prefer to settle down early and start a family with someone he genuinely loves.
The 29-year-old music star shared his thoughts during an interview with British media personality Madame Joyce, where he discussed relationships, marriage and the possibility of having children at a relatively young age.
Joeboy explained that his perspective on early marriage changed after watching an interview with Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson, who spoke about wishing he had settled down earlier in life despite his reputation as a ladies’ man.
According to Joeboy, hearing Egbuson express such a sentiment made him reconsider the idea of marrying young.
Timini Egbuson Changed His Perspective
The singer said Egbuson’s comments stood out to him because of the actor’s public image and popularity among women.
“I saw an interview of Timini. He’s like the ideal playboy; almost all the girls claim to love him, and he was like, he wished he got married early,” Joeboy said.
The singer explained that the statement made him think that there could be advantages to settling down early, particularly when the marriage is built around genuine love.
“I was like, if you’re a playboy and you can say this, that means marrying early might actually be nice,” he added.
Joeboy noted that his preference for early marriage is not based solely on Egbuson’s opinion. Rather, he sees the possibility of building a family early as something appealing when the relationship is with someone he truly loves.
‘Being 40 And Having A 16-Year-Old Is Cute’
For Joeboy, one of the attractions of marrying early is the possibility of having older children while still relatively young himself.
The singer said he likes the idea of reaching the age of 40 with a teenage child, describing the prospect as appealing.
“That is not the only identifier for me. But marrying early to someone who you genuinely love is going to be cute. Being 40 and having a 16-year-old kid is cute,” he said.
His comments suggest that the singer sees early marriage not simply as a social expectation but as an opportunity to experience parenthood while still young enough to build a strong relationship with his children.
Marriage Should Come From Love
Despite expressing his preference for getting married early, Joeboy cautioned against entering marriage simply because it looks attractive or because people believe it is the right thing to do at a particular age.
He stressed that marriage should be based on genuine feelings and a relationship that feels right to both partners.
“But marriage is not really about whenever it feels cool. If it just feels right to you and you love the person, do it,” he said.
The singer maintained that love should remain an important consideration when making the decision to marry.
“Personally, I would rather get married early,” he added.
Joeboy Wants A Private Family Life
While Joeboy is open about his preference for early marriage, he revealed that he would not necessarily make such a development public if it happened now.
The singer said he would prefer to keep his marriage and family life away from public attention, particularly in the early stages.
“But if I get married right now, nobody is going to know,” he said.
According to him, he could choose to maintain the privacy of his family until he has several children, allowing him to protect his personal life from the intense public attention that comes with being a celebrity.
“Maybe when I have like three kids, people will now find out that Joeboy has a whole family somewhere,” he added.
The singer’s comments highlight his desire to separate his public career from his private life. While he continues to enjoy the attention that comes with his music career, Joeboy appears interested in keeping major personal milestones away from the spotlight.
For now, the singer has simply shared his preference for settling down early, emphasising that the most important factor is finding someone he genuinely loves and with whom marriage feels right.
