Former England international striker Jamie Vardy has recalled facing Lionel Messi and explained why the Argentine gave him a different kind of problem on the football pitch.

Vardy's career brought him up against some of the biggest names in the game. Among them was Cristiano Ronaldo, another player widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of his generation. But when Vardy compared the experience of facing Ronaldo with playing against Messi, he made it clear that the Barcelona and Argentina legend offered something different.

For Vardy, the most striking thing was not simply Messi's reputation or the number of goals he had scored. It was what happened whenever the ball reached his feet.

Messi had a way of keeping the ball so close that defenders often struggled to get near him. His movement, balance and control could turn an ordinary situation into a dangerous one within seconds, leaving opponents with little time to react.

That was the experience Vardy remembered when talking about coming up against him.

“I've played against Cristiano Ronaldo, but Messi is different. I was on the pitch just looking at him. The ball was like a magnet to his feet, and there was nothing we could do to stop him. I just told him, ‘Well done.."

Vardy's words give an idea of just how unusual the experience was for a player who spent years competing at the highest level.

The Leicester City striker was never short of confidence or aggression on the pitch, but Messi presented a challenge that was difficult to solve through normal defensive methods. Once the Argentine received the ball, getting it away from him could become a problem in itself.

That close control was one of Messi's trademarks throughout his career. He could carry the ball through tight spaces, change direction quickly and remain composed even when several opponents closed in around him.

Vardy's comparison with Ronaldo also adds another layer to his account. Having faced both players, he was in a position to judge the difference from personal experience rather than simply watching them from the stands or on television.

Ronaldo's physical strength, movement and finishing made him a huge threat, while Messi could cause damage in a different way, often appearing to glide past defenders with the ball seemingly attached to his feet.

For Vardy, that particular experience was memorable enough that, rather than trying to describe a specific goal or moment, he remembered simply standing there and watching Messi do what he did best.
