I’d Love to Play Indian, Spanish Characters — Sunshine Rosman

Actress Sunshine Rosman has opened up about her ambition to portray characters from other ethnicities on screen, specifically expressing interest in taking on Indian and Spanish roles at some point in her career.

Speaking during a conversation with comedian and filmmaker AY Makun, the actress reflected on the range of characters she believes her mixed heritage and physical features would allow her to convincingly embody. 

She explained that her appearance gives her the flexibility to portray an Indian woman with ease, and that she could just as naturally pass for someone of Spanish descent, describing both as ethnic identities she visually aligns with and would like to explore before her career winds down.

 She acknowledged, however, that taking on a lead role in an Indian production specifically would come with a significant commitment, noting that she would need roughly a year to properly learn the language for such a part.

Sunshine's background lends context to her comments. Born to a Nigerian mother from Imo State and a late Canadian father of Italian heritage, she identifies as Nigerian-Canadian, a mixed identity that has shaped both her look and her perspective on the kinds of stories she can tell on screen.

Her acting journey started with a role in Lunch Time Heroes, and she has since built a growing filmography across Nigerian cinema and television. 

Among her credits are Our Best Friend's Wedding, Pretty Thief, Teni's Big Day, When Love Strikes and The Waiter, projects that have helped establish her as a familiar face in the industry.

She also earned a notable credit in Kemi Adetiba's Netflix crime drama, To Kill a Monkey, joining a cast that included William Benson, Bucci Franklin, Bimbo Akintola, Stella Damasus and Chidi Mokeme, further raising her profile beyond the traditional Nollywood circuit and into international streaming territory.

Sunshine's comments point to a broader ambition beyond the roles Nigerian audiences have typically seen her play, hinting at a desire to use her mixed-race features as a creative advantage rather than a limitation. 

Whether such opportunities will materialise within Nollywood or require looking toward international productions remains to be seen, but her remarks suggest she is already thinking about the next phase of a career that has, so far, been built primarily within the Nigerian film industry.
