Having A Male Child Is Not My Priority - Aliko Dangote Says His Daughters Are More Than Capable To Continue His Legacy

Aliko Dangote is looking beyond the traditional expectation that a family business must be passed down to a male heir.

The billionaire businessman believes the future of the Dangote Group can be in the hands of his daughters, and he is not convinced that having a son would necessarily make a difference.

Dangote, one of Africa’s most prominent businessmen, spoke about succession during an interview with Arise TV, where the subject of having a male child came up.

The issue is particularly interesting given his background in Kano, where cultural expectations around sons and family inheritance can be strong.

But Dangote appears to have a different view. For him, having a son is ultimately in God’s hands, and he does not believe a person should force something simply because society expects it.

“God controls everything. And for me, really, sometimes, yeah, you can pray for God to give you a son, but that son might be the one that would tear down the name of the family. So sometimes when God doesn’t give you something, don’t push.

Even if I had a son, I don’t think the son would have done better than these three daughters that I have.”

His three daughters, Halima, Fatima and Mariya, are already familiar with the family’s business operations. Rather than pushing them into the company because of their relationship with him, Dangote said their involvement comes from their own interest.

That, he stated, gives him confidence when thinking about what happens to the business in the years ahead.

He has also been watching the three women closely and believes they will eventually handle the responsibility of leading the group.

“I think, yes, I can see one of them. I’ve been watching all of them, so I can definitely see one of the three that can actually lead.

"They are very, very interested in the business. I’m not forcing them to come and be part of this business, no. They are very interested, and they enjoy it,” he said.

Dangote's comments put the focus less on gender and more on ability, interest and preparation. His position is that whoever eventually takes responsibility for the business should be capable of protecting what has already been built and finding ways to make it bigger.

With a business empire that stretches across several major industries, succession will naturally be an important issue for Dangote and his family.

He appears comfortable with the possibility that the next person at the top could be one of his daughters.

Rather than seeing them simply as his children, Dangote appears to be assessing them as potential business leaders. And based on what he has seen so far, he believes they may not only preserve what he built but could eventually take it beyond his own achievements.
