"I Was Receiving So Many Threats" — Mr Macaroni Breaks His Silence

Popular Nigerian skit maker and social commentator Debo Adebayo, widely known as Mr Macaroni, has opened up about his decision to pull back from criticizing the Nigerian government, citing a wave of threats that left his household on edge.

The comedian, who built a name for himself blending comedy with sharp political commentary, said the pressure eventually became too much to ignore. 

He revealed that the threats grew frequent enough to unsettle his family, particularly his mother, who repeatedly called him in tears after noticing unfamiliar activity around their home.

Recounting the experience, Mr Macaroni explained that the constant scares prompted people close to him to suggest he leave Nigeria altogether for his own protection. He turned down the offer, insisting on staying put despite the danger.

His journey into activism dates back to the 2020 EndSARS protests, a nationwide movement against police brutality that thrust him into the spotlight as one of the more outspoken celebrity voices demanding accountability from Nigerian authorities. 

That activism came at a cost. In February 2021, he was arrested alongside other demonstrators during a protest against the reopening of the Lekki toll gate, a flashpoint site linked to the EndSARS unrest. He spent time in custody before he was granted bail.

Even after the arrest, Mr Macaroni did not retreat entirely from civic issues. He continued weighing in on governance matters, youth involvement in politics, and the importance of voter participation, using his large social media following to push these conversations. 

When the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry released its findings on the October 2020 Lekki shootings, he was among the public figures who spoke up, reaffirming his backing for the EndSARS cause.

His latest comments, however, suggest a shift in strategy rather than a complete withdrawal from public life. 

While he appears to have scaled back direct commentary on government affairs, his broader profile as an entertainer with a conscience remains intact, and his history shows a pattern of returning to civic themes even after difficult experiences.

The disclosure adds a personal dimension to what is often discussed only in political terms, the price public figures pay for dissent in Nigeria. It also reflects a broader pattern among Nigerian celebrities who have had to weigh personal safety against the platforms they've built, especially those who emerged as prominent faces of the EndSARS movement.
