Divorce Scares Me More Than Marriage — Tyler Perry

American filmmaker, actor and playwright Tyler Perry has explained why he has remained unmarried, revealing that his biggest concern is not marriage itself but what could happen if the relationship eventually ends in divorce.

Perry shared his thoughts during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where he reflected on relationships, family and some of the experiences that have shaped his views on love and commitment.

According to the Hollywood star, witnessing the financial consequences of divorce among people he knows has made him particularly cautious about walking down the aisle. 

For Perry, the possibility of losing wealth and stability after a marriage breaks down is enough to make staying single seem like the safer option.

He explained that several people he has watched achieve financial success later experienced significant losses following divorce. That observation, he said, has influenced his decision to enjoy his freedom rather than expose himself to what he considers the risks that can come with marriage.

Perry also admitted that his thoughts about marriage are not always centred on companionship or building a life with someone. Instead, he sometimes imagines the possibility of betrayal, heartbreak and discovering that a partner has been unfaithful.

His comments reflect a more personal side of the filmmaker, who has generally kept much of his private life away from the centre of public attention.

 Rather than presenting marriage as something he necessarily rejects, Perry's remarks suggest that his concerns are largely connected to the potential consequences of a failed relationship.

During the conversation, the filmmaker also spoke emotionally about the loss of his mother, Maxine Perry. He described losing a mother as an experience that can be extremely difficult to process and said he continues to feel her influence even after her death.

Perry expressed his belief that loved ones who have passed away can continue to watch over those they left behind. He recalled the advice and encouragement his mother gave him and suggested that her words remain meaningful in his life.

His relationship with his mother and his family experiences have played an important role in the themes explored throughout his career. His movies, television projects and stage productions have frequently touched on subjects such as family, faith, resilience, personal struggles and overcoming difficult circumstances.

Perry has gone on to establish a major entertainment career, becoming one of the most recognisable figures in American film and television. 

While his professional success continues to grow, his latest comments offer insight into why he has chosen not to make marriage a priority.

For now, Perry appears comfortable with his decision to remain single, particularly as he weighs the potential emotional and financial consequences that could follow if a marriage were to end.
