Africa Magic is set to pay tribute to the late Nollywood veteran Olu Jacobs through a new documentary that examines his remarkable career and lasting influence on the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Titled Doyen of Nollywood: Celebrating Olu Jacobs, the documentary is scheduled to premiere on Friday, September 25. Filmmaker Femi Odugbemi directed the project, while Zuri 24 Media handled its production.
The programme will look back at Jacobs’ decades-long journey across theatre, television and film, highlighting some of the milestones that established him as one of Nigeria’s most respected actors.
Several people who knew and worked with the celebrated actor will feature in the documentary. Among those expected to share their memories are his wife, actress Joke Silva, as well as Afolabi Adesanya, Taiwo Ajai Lycett, Richard Mofe Damijo, Patience Ozokwor, Kate Henshaw and Jahman Anikulapo.
Their accounts will provide different perspectives on Jacobs’ career, including his approach to his craft, professionalism and the impact he had on younger performers and other people working within the creative industry.
Jacobs died on September 16 at the age of 84. His family confirmed his passing in a statement released by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, while also appealing to members of the public to respect their privacy during the period of mourning.
The documentary will premiere on Africa Magic Showcase at 6:35 pm and will subsequently be broadcast on other Africa Magic channels, including Africa Magic Epic and Africa Magic Family.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs developed his acting skills at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. His career subsequently took him through British theatre and television before he became a major presence in international productions and Nigerian cinema.
Over the years, he appeared in several notable productions, including The Dogs of War, Dry White Season, Unforgiven, The Royal Hibiscus Hotel and Oloture.
Beyond acting, Jacobs played a role in developing Nigeria’s entertainment industry through his work away from the screen. He and Joke Silva co-founded the Lufodo Group, which became involved in various aspects of the creative sector.
His contributions earned him several recognitions during his lifetime. Among them was the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. He was also honoured by the Nigerian government with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR, in 2011.
Through the new documentary, Africa Magic will revisit the life and career of an actor whose work spanned generations and multiple stages of the entertainment industry.
