Two Killed In Machete Attack At Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX, Lekki

 Two people lost their lives in a violent attack that unfolded at the car park of Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX in Lekki, Lagos, in the early hours of Saturday.

Filmhouse Group addressed the incident in a statement released later that day, clarifying that the attack took place outside the cinema's premises and had no connection to its day-to-day business.

Confirming the fatalities, the Lagos State Police Command corroborated the death toll, a development first reported by Vanguard.

Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi explained that a man wielding a cutlass launched an assault on security staff stationed at the facility.

 One officer was killed in the attack, while another sustained injuries. Adebisi further disclosed that the attacker, believed to be homeless, was later set upon by a mob and did not survive the encounter.

"Two people have been confirmed dead," she stated, though she noted that investigators had yet to establish the full identities of those involved or piece together exactly how the events unfolded.

According to the police spokesperson, efforts are underway to retrieve and analyse CCTV recordings from the scene, a step authorities hope will clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack and reveal whether additional individuals played any part in it.

In its response, Filmhouse Group affirmed that it was fully cooperating with law enforcement and had since ramped up security measures across all its branches nationwide.

The company also paid tribute to its security personnel, describing their actions during the incident as instrumental in preventing further harm.

 "The security team stood between danger and the people in their care, and it is through their bravery that the situation was contained and safety restored. Their commitment and courage in that moment will not be forgotten," the statement read.

Filmhouse further emphasised that protecting the welfare of its employees and patrons continues to be its top priority as the police investigation proceeds.

The Lekki area, known for hosting some of Lagos's most popular entertainment and leisure spots, has in recent times witnessed a string of security concerns that have raised questions about safety around commercial and recreational hubs in the state.

As details continue to emerge, attention will likely turn to how security protocols at high-traffic entertainment venues like Filmhouse Cinemas can be strengthened to prevent similar occurrences in the future. 

For now, both the police and Filmhouse Group say they remain committed to ensuring that a full and transparent account of what transpired is made available to the public once investigations are concluded.
