Nigeria’s Super Falcons will renew their rivalry with Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses on Sunday when both sides clash in a crucial 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in Casablanca.
The encounter, scheduled for 6pm Nigerian time at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, carries added significance as the winner will book a place in the semi-finals and secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The losing side, however, will have another opportunity to qualify through the African play-off route.
Falcons Seeking Another Continental Triumph
The Super Falcons, 10-time African champions and reigning WAFCON holders, will head into the encounter hoping to build on their strong finish to the group stage.
Nigeria endured a difficult start to the tournament after suffering a 3-2 defeat to debutants Malawi in their opening Group C fixture.
They responded with a narrow 1-0 victory over Zambia in their second match, with Asisat Oshoala scoring the decisive goal.
The Falcons were forced to play more than half of the match with 10 players after Oluwatosin Demehin was sent off, but they held on to secure an important victory.
Nigeria then produced their most convincing performance of the group stage, defeating Egypt 6-2 in their final fixture.
Six different players found the net for the defending champions as they secured second place in the group and progressed to the knockout stage.
Cameroon Arrive Unbeaten
Cameroon, meanwhile, finished top of Group D without suffering a defeat.
The Indomitable Lionesses opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Mali, with Marie Gisele Ngah Manga scoring both goals.
She was also on target when Cameroon defeated Ghana 1-0 before the Central Africans were held to a 1-1 draw by tournament debutants Cape Verde.
Their unbeaten run underlines the challenge awaiting Nigeria, with Cameroon expected to provide a stern test for the defending champions.
Familiar WAFCON Rivals
The two nations have a long history of competitive meetings in women’s football, making Sunday’s encounter another chapter in their rivalry.
Nigeria and Cameroon last met competitively at the 2022 WAFCON, also in Casablanca.
The Super Falcons prevailed on that occasion, with Rasheedat Ajibade scoring in the 56th minute to send Nigeria into the semi-finals.
The Cameroonians will now be hoping for a different outcome as they attempt to reach the last four for the first time since 2016.
Madugu Targets World Cup Ticket
Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu has made it clear that qualification for the World Cup remains the team’s immediate priority.
Speaking ahead of the match, Madugu said the objective was to secure the World Cup ticket before turning attention to retaining the continental crown.
“Our objective remains picking the World Cup ticket and then going ahead to retain the trophy. Nothing has changed,” he said.
“We know what it means, and we will be ready for it.”
Echegini Warns Falcons To Improve
Midfielder Jennifer Echegini also acknowledged that Nigeria would need to address some of the defensive weaknesses exposed during the group stage.
She noted that opponents had improved over the years and stressed the importance of making adjustments before facing Cameroon.
The midfielder said the team had worked on tightening the midfield and improving its defensive structure ahead of the knockout clash.
Nigeria enter the match as Africa’s highest-ranked team and 36th in the world, giving the defending champions an advantage on paper.
However, Cameroon’s unbeaten group-stage record means the Falcons cannot afford to rely solely on their ranking or past success.
For Cameroon, the match offers an opportunity to return to the WAFCON semi-finals after a lengthy absence, while Nigeria are seeking to remain on course for both World Cup qualification and another continental title.
With a place in the last four and a ticket to the 2027 World Cup at stake, Sunday’s encounter promises to be another intense chapter in the rivalry between two of Africa’s most established women’s football teams.
