Omoyele Sowore has alleged that the Department of State Services (DSS) monitored his movements during his stay in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he travelled for the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference.
Sowore said the alleged surveillance became apparent after he attended the Kay Hikers gathering and delivered a speech there. He claimed that, following the event, he and those around him began noticing movements they considered unusual.
Rather than continue using the same vehicle, Sowore said they decided to change vehicles as a precaution.
The decision, according to him, led to the discovery of an electronic device attached beneath the security vehicle they had been using.
Sowore alleged that the device was deliberately placed there to monitor his movements while he was in the state. He linked the discovery to his suspicion that the DSS had been keeping track of him since his arrival in Port Harcourt.
Recounting what happened, Sowore said:
“DSS has apparently been tracking my movements since I arrived in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference.
After my speech at the Kay Hikers gathering, we noticed some strange movements and decided to switch vehicles.
That was when we discovered an electronic tracking device attached underneath the security vehicle we had used that night.”
The allegation adds another layer to Sowore’s account of his activities during the NBA conference. His description suggests that the discovery was not made through a planned search of the vehicle but happened after the decision to change vehicles because of what he described as strange movements.
The security vehicle, which had been used by his team that night, became the focus of attention after the alleged tracking device was found underneath it.
Sowore has not, in the statement, provided details about the make or model of the device, how long it had allegedly been attached to the vehicle, or who specifically installed it. He also did not disclose any technical findings establishing who operated the device.
His allegation centres on the claim that his movements had been monitored from the time he arrived in Port Harcourt for the conference.
The Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference brought lawyers and other participants to Rivers State for the annual gathering, with several activities taking place during the event.
For Sowore, however, the trip took an unexpected turn after what he described as unusual activity around his movement and the subsequent discovery beneath the vehicle.
