P-Square Had Issues Even During Their Prime, Says Gabriel Afolayan

The issues surrounding P-Square may have become more visible in recent years, but according to actor and singer Gabriel Afolayan, the disagreements between the famous music duo are nothing new.

Afolayan recently shared his understanding of the relationship between Peter and Paul Okoye, pointing out that the tension reportedly dates back to the early years of their career. For him, what people may see as a recent problem has actually been developing for a very long time.

He traced the story to 2005, a period when P-Square were firmly establishing themselves in the Nigerian music scene. Afolayan said that even during those early days, there were disagreements over their music, particularly when it came to deciding which songs should make their albums.

Rather than describing the situation as something that suddenly happened between the brothers, he suggested that differences in opinion had been part of their working relationship for years.

Afolayan wrote:

“The Psquare story that I know dated back to 2005 (get squared era) at EKO reelmix studio. They’ve always had issues with songs selection for any album they intend to release. Argument on whose songs should be picked more and Jude has always been a decider of that. This fight don tey no be today. All through their prime era. And the marriage thing, chai talk bokku...”

His account paints a picture of two brothers who had to deal with disagreements not only as siblings but also as creative partners. When two people are working closely together and both have strong ideas about their music, decisions over songs, albums and the direction of the group can naturally become difficult.

According to Afolayan, Jude Okoye also played an important role in settling some of those disagreements, particularly when it came to deciding which songs would eventually be selected.

The comment also touches on another part of the P-Square story  their personal lives and marriages. Afolayan did not go into detail about that aspect, ending his statement with, “And the marriage thing, chai talk bokku...” His words suggest that there is considerably more to the history than what has been publicly discussed.

P-Square, made up of twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, enjoyed years of success together before their relationship became strained and the group eventually went their separate ways. Their disagreements have remained a subject of public discussion, especially because of how successful they were during their time together.

Afolayan’s account offers a different perspective: that the difficulties did not begin with their eventual separation. Instead, he remembers disagreements existing from much earlier in their journey, including during the period when the duo was still building the career that would make them one of Africa’s best-known music acts.
