Veteran Canadian actor and renowned voice artist Peter Cullen, celebrated worldwide for giving life to Optimus Prime, has died at the age of 85.
Cullen reportedly died peacefully on Wednesday at his residence in Los Angeles, surrounded by members of his family. His family confirmed his death but did not reveal the cause.
For generations of animation lovers, Cullen’s voice became inseparable from Optimus Prime, the respected leader of the Autobots in the Transformers franchise.
He first took on the character in 1984 when the original animated television series was launched, delivering the deep and commanding performance that would become one of the most recognisable voices in popular culture.
His association with the Transformers franchise continued long after the original animated series.
Cullen reprised his role as Optimus Prime in the live-action film series, beginning with Michael Bay’s 2007 movie.
His return helped connect longtime fans of the franchise with a new generation introduced to the Autobots on the big screen.
However, Cullen’s career extended well beyond Optimus Prime.
He was also widely recognised for voicing Eeyore, the melancholy but lovable donkey from Winnie the Pooh productions.
Over the years, he contributed his voice to several other television and film projects, demonstrating the range that made him one of the most respected performers in the voice-acting industry.
Among his other notable credits was K.A.R.R. from Knight Rider.
Cullen also supplied the distinctive vocal sounds associated with the Predator in the 1987 science-fiction action film Predator, adding another memorable performance to his extensive body of work.
His contribution to Transformers became particularly significant after Optimus Prime was killed in The Transformers: The Movie in 1986.
The character’s death generated an emotional response from fans, many of whom strongly wanted the iconic Autobot leader brought back.
Cullen later reflected on his enduring relationship with the character, describing his return to the role as similar to putting on an old, comfortable pair of shoes.
