Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr has sparked a conversation about money, power and expectations in romantic relationships after sharing her views on what could happen if she becomes wealthier than her partner.

The singer made the revelation while appearing on the Wahala podcast, where she discussed financial dynamics between men and women in relationships.

Ayra Starr suggested that she would take control of the relationship if she discovered that she had significantly more money than the man she was dating.

According to the singer, having greater financial resources could give her an advantage over her partner.

However, she maintained that the man would still be expected to play the role of a provider despite her superior financial position.

The “Bloody Samaritan” crooner also revealed that she would deliberately keep the extent of her wealth away from her partner.

She explained that she would not want him to know how much money she had, even though she would continue to expect him to contribute financially to the relationship.

“If I date a man who I am richer than, I will control him. But even if I am richer, he will still be providing, and I won’t let him know I have a lot of money,” she said.

Her comments have generated different reactions, particularly on social media, with people offering contrasting opinions about traditional gender roles and financial responsibilities in relationships.

Some people appeared to support the singer’s position, arguing that a man should continue to provide for his partner regardless of how much she earns.

For those who share this view, a woman having more money should not automatically remove the man’s responsibility as a provider.

Others, however, criticised the idea of deliberately concealing financial strength from a romantic partner.

They argued that openness about money is important in serious relationships and that intentionally hiding wealth could create mistrust or conflict between partners.

The debate has also raised broader questions about changing expectations in modern relationships, particularly as more women become financially independent and achieve significant success in their careers.

Ayra Starr, who has established herself as one of Nigeria’s prominent young Afrobeats stars, has frequently attracted attention for her outspoken personality and views on relationships, music and personal independence.

Her latest comments have once again placed her at the centre of an online discussion, with fans and critics debating whether financial equality should influence traditional expectations between couples.

While opinions remain divided, the singer’s statement highlights the continuing conversation around money, gender roles and power dynamics in modern relationships.
