Nollywood actress Omotoyosi Adesanya has addressed the criticism she received after showing up at the birthday celebration of actress Iyabo Ojo’s grandson on Saturday.
The actress found herself having to explain her decision to attend the celebration because it came only a few days after the death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan Ogogo, whom she regarded as her boss and someone who was close to her.
According to Adesanya, her attendance at another person’s celebration should not be interpreted as a lack of grief or respect for the actor she worked with. She made it clear that the relationship she had with Ogogo was meaningful to her and that his death has not changed the regard she has for him.
She also questioned the idea that mourning someone must necessarily mean putting every other aspect of life on hold for a particular period.
The actress said:
"So some Nigerians have been calling me Hypocrite for attending Actress Iyabo Ojo grandson birthday on Saturday. They claimed l didn't mourn my late Boss Actor Taiwo Hassan Ogogo properly.
Point of correction, my late Boss was a very dear person to me while he was alive and even after his demise l still respect and honour him. Alhaji Ogogo didn't die prematurely if we truly wants to be sincere with eachother
He died at almost 67yrs, and he was well loved. If he were to be a Christian am so sure we wouldn't have buried him quickly.
we would have still be celebrating him everyday infact we would have gotten him a glass coffins but we all know he was a Muslim and we needed to act in accordance. So l am not really moved by what some set of people are saying".
Adesanya's comments also touched on the circumstances surrounding Ogogo's burial. She noted that the late actor lived to an age she considered fulfilled and was widely loved, while pointing out that his Muslim faith meant his burial had to follow Islamic practices.
For her, the speed with which the burial took place should not be confused with the depth of the love people had for him. She maintained that people can continue to remember and honour someone who has died even after the funeral has taken place.
The actress appears to be drawing a line between grieving privately and being expected to withdraw completely from social activities. Her attendance at the birthday celebration, she explained, does not cancel out the memories, affection and respect she had for Ogogo.
Ogogo was a major figure in the Yoruba movie industry, and his death has been felt by colleagues and admirers who knew his work and influence. For Adesanya, however, the way she chooses to continue with her life after his passing should not be used as a measure of how much she valued him.
Her message is that mourning does not have one fixed appearance. While some people may choose to stay away from celebrations after losing someone, others may return to their normal activities while still carrying the memories of the person they lost.
The actress therefore maintained that she remains unbothered by the criticism and that her respect for her late boss remains unchanged.
