Ogogo Treated Acting as More Than a Job - Joke Silva

Veteran actress Joke Silva has added her voice to the wave of tributes following the death of respected Yoruba film industry figure Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, sharing a heartfelt reflection on his approach to acting rather than simply mourning his passing.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Silva posted a photo of the late actor accompanied by a thoughtful message. 

Rather than claiming a close personal friendship, she spoke to something she felt was even more telling  her familiarity with his body of work over the years. 

She described watching him perform as something that revealed a deeper seriousness beneath the surface, noting that he treated each role less like a task to complete and more like something worth genuinely exploring, favoring authenticity over flashy display.

Silva went further, framing Ogogo's on-screen presence as almost reflective in nature  someone who used the craft of acting as a lens for examining life honestly, inviting audiences along for that process rather than simply performing for them. 

She also touched on the sense of genuine enjoyment he seemed to bring to his work, suggesting that this kind of natural comfort in front of the camera is something colleagues and audiences alike can usually recognize, even without close personal contact.

Closing her tribute, she expressed hope that his family and loved ones would find comfort in this difficult time, addressing him by his full name, Taiwo Babatunde Al-Hassan.

Ogogo's death came on Sunday, August 23, following a battle with stage four cancer. He was 66. News of his passing was first shared publicly by fellow actor Jide Kosoko, setting off an outpouring of condolences from figures across Nigeria's entertainment industry.

In line with Islamic tradition, he was laid to rest the following day, Monday, in his hometown of Ilaro, located in Ogun State.

The funeral drew a significant turnout of mourners, including fellow performers Yinka Quadri, Jide Kosoko, Faithia Balogun, Femi Adebayo, Mr Latin, and Ireti Osayemi, alongside close family and friends who gathered to honor his memory.

Born Taiwo Babatunde Al-Hassan, the actor's career stretched back to the 1970s, a run that saw him grow into one of the most familiar and respected names within Yoruba-language cinema. 

Over the decades, he built a substantial filmography while also expanding into behind-the-camera work as both a producer and director, giving him a lasting influence on the industry that extended well beyond his performances alone.

His death marks the loss of one of the genre's veteran figures, with tributes from colleagues like Silva underscoring not just his professional output but the manner and integrity with which he approached his craft throughout his career.
