Nollywood actor Sunday Afolabi has spoken publicly about the financial difficulties he has faced in recent times, explaining how a decision to relocate from the city affected both his acting career and other sources of income.
Afolabi opened up about his situation during an interview with actress and filmmaker Biola Bayo. He explained that he moved to Badagry with the intention of building his own home and creating a more stable future for himself and his family.
However, he said the relocation came with consequences he did not anticipate.
According to the actor, living far from the centre of the entertainment industry made it increasingly difficult for him to access acting opportunities.
His photography business, which had also provided him with an additional source of income, suffered a similar setback.
The situation reportedly became more challenging after his camera developed a fault, limiting his ability to continue taking photography jobs.
At the same time, his Nissan Quest developed a problem that he could not afford to repair. With limited income coming in, Afolabi eventually made the difficult decision to sell the vehicle.
He revealed that the proceeds from the sale were used to purchase a fairly used motorcycle. However, he admitted that he was not accustomed to riding a motorcycle and experienced several falls while trying to adjust to his new means of transportation.
The actor also addressed a video of him driving a bus that circulated online. Rather than viewing the job as something beneath him, Afolabi explained that he was simply trying to find a legitimate way to survive during a difficult period. He stressed that he would rather work honestly than depend on people for food.
Afolabi recalled an encounter with someone who recognised him while he was working. According to the actor, the individual was surprised to see someone known for appearing on television doing a different kind of job.
The person reportedly encouraged him to return to the city and reconnect with colleagues and contacts within the entertainment industry.
The experience appears to have reinforced Afolabi's determination to keep working despite his circumstances.
He said he is willing to take up any legitimate opportunity available to him and does not consider honest work embarrassing.
The actor described himself as someone with several skills and explained that he is prepared to explore different ways of earning an income.
He said having a reliable vehicle would significantly improve his situation because he could use it for ride-hailing services such as Uber while also making it easier to move around for professional opportunities.
Afolabi also appealed to Nigerians for assistance, particularly with getting a dependable vehicle and securing better accommodation. His request comes as he tries to rebuild his career and regain financial stability.
Despite the setbacks, the actor's comments show that he remains determined to support himself and his family through legitimate means.
His experience also highlights some of the difficulties entertainers can face when professional opportunities become limited.
For Afolabi, the immediate goal appears to be finding a sustainable source of income while working towards returning to the entertainment scene.
He has made it clear that he is willing to work, learn and explore different opportunities rather than rely solely on his status as an actor.
