Nigerian singer May D has revisited one of the defining moments of his music career, recalling how his time with Square Records came to an end after a disagreement over a contract he says he could not accept.
Speaking during a recent interview on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the singer looked back on his years with the P-Square camp and explained why he believes his relationship with Jude Okoye eventually fell apart.
According to May D, he was presented with a contract that did not sit well with him. Rather than sign a document he wasn't comfortable with, he chose to reject it, a decision he says changed everything.
Recalling the incident, he said:
“Jude Okoye asked me to leave the boy’s quarters when I refused to sign a contract that I wasn’t satisfied with.”
The singer explained that he spent several years around Peter and Paul Okoye while trying to establish himself in the music industry. During that period, he lived at the Okoye family's residence in Lagos and worked closely with the Square Records team.
Although he was widely regarded as part of the camp, May D said there was no formal recording agreement when he first joined. He maintained that he contributed to several projects and performances before discussions about a proper contract eventually came up.
According to him, things took a different turn when the proposed agreement was presented. Rather than commit to terms he believed were unfair, he decided to walk away. He alleged that shortly after rejecting the contract, Jude Okoye asked him to leave the boys' quarters where he had been staying.
May D also revisited the conditions under which he lived during that period. He claimed he shared the boys' quarters with members of the household staff and, at times, slept on a television carton while pursuing his dream of becoming a successful artiste. Despite those challenges, he said he remained committed to his music and continued contributing to projects under the Square Records umbrella.
His account has resurfaced as renewed attention is being paid to Square Records following Peter Okoye's recent allegations against Jude Okoye over royalty payments and the management of the group's finances. While May D's experience relates to a different period and different circumstances, it adds another perspective to conversations surrounding the label's operations during its peak years.
Jude Okoye, however, has consistently denied May D's version of events. He has previously maintained that May D was never signed as a conventional recording artiste under Square Records, insisting that their working relationship was different from what has been portrayed publicly.
May D's comments revisit a chapter that has remained part of his career story for years. As fresh discussions continue around Square Records and its management, his account offers another glimpse into his experience during the years he spent working alongside one of Nigeria's biggest music groups.
