The planned cinema release of Linda Ikeji’s latest film, The Night of June 7th, has been suspended following a directive from the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB).
The movie, which was expected to open in cinemas across Nigeria on Friday, was produced by media entrepreneur Linda Ikeji and distributed by Nile Entertainment. However, audiences will now have to wait until the regulatory review surrounding the project is completed.
Nile Entertainment announced the development in a statement shared on social media, explaining that the decision followed the NFVCB’s examination of the film. The distributor noted that the production deals with sensitive subject matter inspired by a real-life incident, prompting additional regulatory consideration.
As part of the review process, the NFVCB has referred the movie to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further assessment and advice. Until the relevant authorities reach a conclusion, the film will not be available for theatrical exhibition or distribution.
Nile Entertainment General Manager, Nowe Segun-Ojo, said the company would cooperate with the regulatory authorities throughout the process. The distributor also expressed its intention to make the movie available to the public once all required approvals have been secured.
The company is expected to announce another release date after the review has been completed and the necessary clearance obtained.
The development is the latest regulatory setback involving a Nigerian film. Earlier in the week, the NFVCB intervened in the planned Lagos premiere of Living in Colors, stating that the production had not been submitted to the board for classification.
According to the board, its preliminary assessment of the film’s trailer had also raised concerns about its content. It subsequently warned against the proposed premiere and disclosed plans to pursue legal action against those involved in the unauthorised exhibition.
The NFVCB, led by Shaibu Husseini, is mandated to regulate the classification and public exhibition of films and video content in Nigeria. Productions intended for public viewing are expected to undergo the appropriate classification process before reaching audiences.
For The Night of June 7th, the suspension means the much-anticipated project will remain unavailable in cinemas until the authorities complete their assessment. For now, the producers and distributors have urged audiences to await further information on when the film will officially return to the release schedule.
