Skit maker Adebayo Ridwan, popularly known as Isbae U, has opened up about the painful loss of his late father, veteran Yoruba actor Kamal “Sir Kay” Adebayo.
Kamal Adebayo died in December 2022. Reflecting on their relationship, Isbae U revealed that they had only started developing a close and meaningful bond shortly before his father’s death.
The content creator explained that growing up apart from his father affected their relationship, making it difficult for them to establish a strong connection when they eventually came back into each other’s lives.
Speaking on VJ Adams Live, Isbae U said things began to change when his father started taking an interest in his career as a skit maker.
According to him, their shared connection to entertainment created an opportunity for them to become closer. His father, who had extensive experience as an actor, began offering him advice and contributing ideas that helped shape his comedy career.
Isbae U recalled that Kamal encouraged him to watch different movies to get inspiration for his skits. He also shared ideas with him and helped him get actors for some of his productions.
He said the relationship gradually became stronger as they discovered their common interest in entertainment.
“We just started getting close and realised that we had something in common, which was my skits and his being an actor.
“So, he advised me on that path, telling me to watch some movies to get more ideas, sharing his ideas with me and getting me actors,” he said.
The skit maker said one of the things he misses most about his father is the opportunity to have private conversations with him and freely share personal matters without worrying about his information being revealed.
“I miss the privilege of sharing something with my dad without being scared of it getting out. We didn’t get to have that togetherness for a long time,” he said.
Isbae U admitted that losing his father just as they were beginning to grow closer remains particularly painful for him.
He explained that because he did not grow up with Kamal, there was not much emotional connection between them when they initially reconnected. They had limited memories and experiences together, and it took time for them to become comfortable around each other.
However, their relationship eventually began to develop as they spent more time connecting through his skit-making career.
“I didn’t grow up with him, so when he came into my life, we didn’t have a lot of connection or things to say. It was when we started getting along well that he died,” he said.
Despite the pain of losing his father, Isbae U said he finds comfort in knowing that Kamal was able to witness his progress before his death.
For the comedian, having his father see him succeed in his chosen career was something he deeply appreciated, even though he wished they had been given more time to strengthen their relationship.
“I’m glad that he got to see me win,” he added.
Isbae U’s account highlights the emotional complexity of losing a parent after years of limited contact, particularly when a relationship has only just begun to heal and develop.
Although their time together was brief, the content creator continues to cherish the advice and support his father gave him during the period when they were rebuilding their bond.
The late Kamal Adebayo was known for his contributions to the Yoruba film industry and remained an influential figure in Nigerian entertainment. For Isbae U, his father’s legacy extends beyond his career as an actor, as the memories of the guidance and encouragement he received from him continue to hold personal significance.
