Rapper Phyno has weighed in on why certain Igbo entertainers rake in more income than their Afrobeats counterparts who headline arenas abroad, pointing to the sheer volume of local bookings as the real difference maker.
The "Fada Fada" hitmaker made the remarks while featuring on Adesope Live's Afrobeats Podcast, where he broke down the economics behind celebrity earnings in the East.
According to him, it's not about fame or reach, it all boils down to how frequently an artist is booked for social functions.
Phyno explained that many Igbo stars are consistently active on the event circuit, appearing at weddings, birthdays, and burial ceremonies almost every week.
This constant engagement, he noted, puts them in a stronger financial position than acts who rely on packed stadium shows overseas.
In his words, some of these entertainers pull in more cash than performers who've graced stages like the O2 Arena or London Stadium, simply because they're working practically every Friday through Sunday. He contrasted this with the Afrobeats scene, where an artist's earning power is often tied to landing a chart-topping single first.
Breaking it down further, Phyno's point was that this kind of income doesn't hinge on chart performance or a song blowing up. Instead, it comes from a dependable cycle of showing up at ceremonies and celebrations weekend after weekend, giving these artists financial consistency that even international acclaim doesn't always guarantee.
