I Spent $14,000 On A Fake Rolex Because Of Peer Pressure - Banky W

Banky W has opened up about one of the biggest financial mistakes he has ever made, revealing how the desire to fit into certain social circles pushed him into spending thousands of dollars on what eventually turned out to be a fake Rolex.

The singer and entrepreneur shared the experience during an appearance on The Mentality podcast with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, explaining that the decision had very little to do with his personal taste and everything to do with seeking approval from people whose opinions seemed important at the time.

According to him, the conversation that led to the purchase started when another artist noticed he wasn't wearing a Rolex. When Banky W explained that he preferred putting his money into investments and real estate rather than expensive accessories, he was told that his priorities were misplaced.

"There are some rooms you won't enter, and they won't respect you if you're not wearing a Rolex."

Those words stayed with him. Before long, the artist introduced him to a watch dealer who supposedly had access to luxury timepieces at attractive prices. Believing he had found a bargain, Banky W decided to go ahead with the purchase.

Looking back now, he admits it was a decision driven more by pressure than by common sense.

"I actually went through the process and bought a fake Rolex for like $14,000. Yes, I confess it."

For a while, owning the watch gave him exactly what he thought he wanted. Wearing it made him feel accepted in spaces where appearances often seemed to matter. But that feeling didn't last.

As the months passed, the expensive purchase began showing signs that something wasn't right. Instead of lasting like the luxury timepiece he believed he had bought, the watch started falling apart.

"Maybe six to nine months down, the Rolex started having k-leg."

He explained that different parts of the watch gradually came loose, and it eventually stopped functioning properly. About a year after buying it, the watch had become completely unusable.

The biggest surprise came later when he found out the man who sold him the watch had reportedly been arrested by the police for dealing in counterfeit luxury watches. It was then that he fully realized he had paid a huge amount of money for something that was never genuine.

Although the experience was an expensive one, Banky W says it completely changed the way he views wealth, status and success. He now believes that trying to impress people with material possessions can easily lead to poor financial decisions.

Instead, he says people should focus on building lasting value rather than chasing symbols of success that exist mainly to win approval from others. For him, the fake Rolex became more than a bad purchase it became a reminder that external validation is temporary, while wise financial decisions have lasting value.

Reflecting on the incident, Banky W said the experience taught him that seeking validation through status symbols is simply not worth the price, no matter how convincing the pressure may seem.
