Beninese music icon Angélique Kidjo has added another remarkable achievement to her long list of accomplishments after being honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The recognition celebrates a career that has taken African music to audiences far beyond the continent and established Kidjo as one of its most influential international voices.
The honour carries special significance because Kidjo becomes the first African musician, as well as the first Black African, to receive a star on the iconic Hollywood landmark. Her achievement is being seen as a major milestone not only for the singer but also for African music and culture on the global stage.
Kidjo was recognised in the Recording category, reflecting her extensive contribution to music over several decades.
The singer has released 18 albums and won five Grammy Awards, achievements that have helped cement her reputation as a major figure in contemporary African music.
Her work has consistently brought elements of African heritage into conversations about international music.
Born in Ouidah, Benin, Kidjo discovered her passion for music while she was young and eventually developed a career that has lasted for more than 40 years.
Her musical identity is known for crossing boundaries, bringing together traditional African influences with sounds associated with jazz, funk, R&B and pop.
Her career has also been shaped by collaborations with leading performers from different generations and regions.
Among those she has worked with are Nigerian stars Burna Boy, Yemi Alade and Mr Eazi, as well as global names including Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel and John Legend. These partnerships have further widened her reach and introduced her sound to new audiences.
Kidjo's impact is not limited to music. She has also devoted attention to social causes, particularly girls' education and women's empowerment across Africa.
Through her public profile, she has continued to use her influence to draw attention to issues affecting young people and women on the continent.
Her new star adds to a career already filled with major awards, international performances and influential musical partnerships.
More importantly, it gives greater visibility to an artist who has spent decades presenting African stories, rhythms and perspectives to listeners around the world.
