Nigerian gospel singer Asu Ekiye has announced the end of his 28-year marriage to his wife, Kunemofa Asu, revealing that their marriage officially ended a year ago.

The Bayelsa-born musician, popularly known as the “Prince of the Niger Delta”, disclosed the development in a Facebook post titled “Public Notice” on Thursday.

Ekiye described the marriage as a deeply personal chapter of his life that was filled with years of growth, experiences and reflection.

The gospel singer, however, did not disclose the specific circumstances that led to the end of the marriage, choosing instead to keep the details private.

Marriage Ended A Year Ago

According to Ekiye, the marriage did not end recently despite his announcement coming publicly on Thursday.

He revealed that he and Kunemofa had gone their separate ways a year ago but deliberately decided not to make the development public immediately.

The singer explained that he needed time to process the transition before sharing the news with the public.

He said the decision to wait was informed by his desire to gain perspective, clarity and acceptance regarding the end of a relationship that had lasted nearly three decades.

“I wish to announce, with a profound sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that my marriage to KUNEMOFA ASU has come to an end, while looking ahead to the possibilities of a new season,” he said.

Ekiye’s statement suggests that he is now prepared to move forward while acknowledging the significance of the years he spent in the marriage.

Ekiye Keeps Details Private

While announcing the end of the marriage, the gospel singer did not reveal what caused the separation.

He also did not make allegations against his former wife or provide details about any disagreements that may have occurred between them.

Instead, he focused on the personal nature of the transition and his decision to announce it only after taking sufficient time to reflect.

Ekiye said the marriage represented an important chapter in his life and that the decision to speak publicly about its conclusion was not one he made hastily.

“This marriage ended a year ago. I have deliberately chosen to make this announcement only now, after allowing time to bring the perspective, clarity and quiet acceptance that such a deeply personal transition deserves,” he added.

Looking Ahead To A New Season

Despite the end of his long-standing marriage, Ekiye’s statement indicated that he is looking towards the future.

The singer referred to the next phase of his life as a “new season”, suggesting that he intends to embrace what lies ahead while maintaining a respectful approach to the chapter that has ended.

His decision to wait a year before announcing the separation also reflects his desire to handle the matter away from the immediate attention that often accompanies public discussions about the private lives of celebrities.

A 28-Year Chapter Comes To An End

Ekiye and Kunemofa’s marriage lasted for 28 years, making the announcement a significant personal development for the gospel singer.

For someone who has spent decades in the public eye through his music career, the end of such a long marriage represents a major change in his personal life.

However, Ekiye has chosen not to publicly discuss the circumstances surrounding the separation, asking the public to understand the announcement as a deeply personal matter.

The singer’s statement comes as he begins what he describes as a new phase of his life, following a year of private reflection and adjustment.

While fans and followers may have questions about what led to the end of the marriage, Ekiye has so far provided no further explanation.

For now, his announcement simply confirms that the 28-year marriage has ended and that he is ready to move forward after taking time to process the transition.
