The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, which marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The public holiday will allow Muslims across Nigeria to observe the religious occasion and participate in activities marking Eid ul Mawlid.

FG Congratulates Nigerian Muslims

In his message, Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and around the world on the occasion.

The minister urged Nigerians to use the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the teachings and values associated with Prophet Muhammad’s life.

He emphasised qualities such as compassion, humility and service to others, describing them as values that remain important to the country at this time.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he said.

Minister Calls For Peace And Unity

Tunji-Ojo also used the occasion to call on Nigerians to continue praying for peace, unity and stronger national cohesion.

He noted that the responsibility for maintaining peace in the country should not rest solely on the government but should be shared by every citizen.

According to the minister, the Eid ul Mawlid celebration provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

He urged citizens to celebrate the occasion peacefully and responsibly while respecting the beliefs and practices of others.

Public Holiday Set For August 25

The declaration means Tuesday, August 25, will be observed as a public holiday across Nigeria in honour of Eid ul Mawlid.

The holiday is expected to give Muslim faithful time to participate in religious activities and celebrations marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

Eid ul Mawlid is observed by Muslims in different parts of the world, with religious gatherings, prayers and other activities often forming part of the celebration.

The Federal Government’s declaration continues its practice of recognising major religious celebrations through public holidays.

FG Reaffirms Commitment To Security

The Minister of Interior also assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting lives and property across the country.

Tunji-Ojo said the government would continue working towards promoting lasting peace and security nationwide.

He encouraged Nigerians to contribute to a peaceful atmosphere during the holiday by conducting themselves responsibly and avoiding actions that could threaten public safety.

The minister also extended his best wishes to the Muslim community ahead of the celebration.

Nigerians Urged To Embrace The Spirit Of The Celebration

Beyond the religious significance of Eid ul Mawlid, Tunji-Ojo encouraged Nigerians to reflect on values that could contribute to a more peaceful and united society.

He highlighted compassion, humility and service as qualities that could help strengthen relationships among citizens and promote greater national cohesion.

The minister called on Nigerians to use the occasion not only to celebrate but also to consider how they can contribute positively to their communities.

With Tuesday now officially declared a public holiday, Muslims across the country are expected to observe the occasion while Nigerians generally will have a day away from regular official and business activities.

The Federal Government has therefore urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and peacefully as the country marks this year’s Eid ul Mawlid.
