There is helping someone because you genuinely want to, and then there is helping someone without thinking about what could happen afterwards.
For Davido, the difference matters.
During his appearance on The Uncut Podcast, the Nigerian music star spoke about kindness and the unpredictable places it can lead a person. His point was that doing something good for another person does not automatically guarantee that the outcome will also be good for you.
Sometimes, a good deed can come back in a positive way. Other times, it can put you in a situation you never expected to find yourself in.
That was where Davido’s advice about keeping receipts came in.
“In life you never know where your kindness can take you. It can either take you up or down. That’s why when you help people, always keep receipts”_ Davido said on The Uncut Podcast.
It is a fairly practical way of looking at something people often approach purely from the emotional side. When somebody needs help, the first instinct may be to step in and do what you can. But according to Davido, that should not mean completely ignoring the possibility that things could change later.
His use of the phrase “keep receipts” goes beyond the literal idea of holding on to paperwork. In everyday terms, it can mean remembering what you did, keeping evidence when necessary and not putting yourself in a position where your side of the story cannot be supported.
The singer’s point also touches on the complicated side of relationships. People can be close today and have a completely different relationship tomorrow. A favour that seemed straightforward at the time can sometimes become a source of disagreement, especially when both sides remember the situation differently.
That is why, in Davido’s view, kindness should come with a little bit of caution.
It does not necessarily mean people should stop helping others or start expecting something in return every time they do a good deed. Rather, his message is about being sensible while doing it.
There is also a reminder in his words that intentions and outcomes are two different things. You can genuinely want to help somebody and still end up somewhere you did not plan to be. The fact that your intentions were good does not always control what happens next.
Davido’s comment on the podcast therefore comes down to a simple lesson: do good, but know what you are getting yourself into.
For someone who chooses to assist another person, especially in situations involving money, commitments or important decisions, keeping a record can make things easier if there is ever a misunderstanding.
And that is essentially what sits behind his advice. Kindness can take you in more than one direction. Sometimes it creates opportunities, strengthens relationships or comes back to you in unexpected ways. At other times, it can leave you wishing you had been a little more careful.
As Davido put it, you never really know where kindness will take you.
So, even when the intention is to help, his advice is to make sure you do not forget yourself in the process.
