African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has made a major pledge to Nigerian football fans, promising to ensure the country qualifies for every FIFA World Cup throughout his proposed eight years in office if elected president in 2027.
Sowore made the declaration in Enugu on Saturday, August 29, 2026, during his participation in the Enugu City International Marathon, where he used the occasion to speak about his vision for Nigerian sports and the broader development of the country.
The presidential hopeful’s comments come at a time when Nigerian football is still dealing with the disappointment of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Eagles’ absence from the tournament has generated widespread criticism and frustration among supporters, particularly because Nigeria has traditionally been one of Africa’s most consistent participants at the World Cup.
Against that backdrop, Sowore said qualification for football’s biggest international tournament would become a priority under his administration.
“If I’m president of Nigeria, we are not missing any World Cup for my eight years. I’ll make sure that happens,” Sowore said.
The AAC candidate also linked his football promise to a wider plan to transform the sports sector. Rather than viewing sports solely as entertainment, he argued that the industry could play a significant role in Nigeria’s economic and international development.
According to Sowore, Nigeria possesses enough sporting talent to compete at the highest level, but the country needs stronger structures, better investment and deliberate policies to translate that potential into consistent international success.
His World Cup pledge is likely to attract particular attention from football enthusiasts, given the importance of the national team to Nigerian sporting culture.
