Nigerian cinema audiences are set to see the much-anticipated musical drama Sweet 16 when the film opens in cinemas across Nigeria and other parts of West Africa on August 14, 2026.
The movie features a notable cast led by Alexx Ekubo, Yemi Alade and Mercy Aigbe. It was written and directed by filmmaker Willis Ikedum and produced by Wheels Pictures, with FilmOne Entertainment handling its distribution.
Sweet 16 centres on a 16-year-old girl whose privileged upbringing has shaped her expectations about life. Played by Daisy Eugene, the outspoken teenager is looking forward to an elaborate birthday celebration when an unexpected discovery about her family's finances changes her understanding of wealth and her family's circumstances.
Rather than focusing solely on teenage celebrations, the film uses the character's experience to explore issues surrounding family, adolescence, changing priorities and the realities that can exist behind a seemingly comfortable lifestyle.
The production was filmed largely in Port Harcourt, giving the movie a distinctive setting while allowing the story to explore the experiences of a young person growing up in a changing environment.
At the Lagos premiere, Mercy Aigbe highlighted the film's relevance to young people. The actress noted that teenagers often develop strong ambitions and want to make independent decisions, making stories that address their experiences particularly important.
Sweet 16 has also attracted attention because it features Alexx Ekubo in what has been described as his final completed screen appearance.
The late actor portrays a proactive political leader who serves as the governor of the state in which the story takes place.
The ensemble cast includes several familiar names from Nigeria's entertainment industry. Among them are Emeka Nwagbaraocha, Kalu Ikeagwu, Denrele Edun, Angel Unigwe, Broda Shaggi, Chief Imo, Uche Jombo and Eronini Osinachi.
Afrobeats singer Yemi Alade also takes on an acting role in the project. Her involvement adds another musical dimension to the production, building on her previous appearances in films and visual projects, including Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Time of the Month and Black Is King.
The film's Lagos premiere attracted actors, teenage performers, social media personalities and other members of the entertainment industry, signalling growing interest ahead of its theatrical debut.
