Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva has urged stakeholders in Nigeria's film industry to embrace professionalism, transparency and innovation, stressing that these qualities are essential for attracting international investors and ensuring the industry's long-term growth.
The respected actress made the remarks while speaking at the inaugural National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) Masterclass Series held at the MUSON Centre in Lagos.
The event brought together filmmakers, producers, legal experts, students and other creative professionals to discuss the future of Nigeria's film industry.
Silva commended the NFVCB for organising a programme focused on practical solutions rather than repeating conversations about the industry's long-standing challenges.
She noted that for many years, stakeholders have identified the same issues without making enough progress toward solving them.
According to her, professionalism extends beyond artistic talent. She explained that filmmakers and production companies must honour contractual agreements, meet project deadlines, maintain transparent financial records and protect intellectual property if Nollywood is to earn the confidence of global investors.
The actress observed that a lack of consistency in these areas has discouraged many international partners from investing in Nigerian productions.
She added that poor financial accountability and weak enforcement of copyright laws continue to limit the industry's ability to secure major funding and distribution opportunities.
Silva also highlighted the importance of stronger industry institutions, including guilds and professional associations, to ensure that actors, producers and other creatives receive fair treatment and proper representation.
She further encouraged industry professionals who belong to multiple organisations to separate their responsibilities in order to promote fairness and improve governance within the creative sector.
Speaking on innovation, Silva praised the remarkable transformation of Nollywood from the era of DVD distribution to today's global streaming platforms. She said the industry has demonstrated impressive creativity but must continue adapting to new technologies and international standards to remain competitive.
The veteran actress also stressed that sustainability should remain a priority. She called for fair compensation, mentorship programmes for emerging talents and responsible production practices that will strengthen the industry for future generations.
Silva concluded by expressing optimism about Nollywood's future, stating that Nigeria possesses the talent and creativity to compete globally.
However, she maintained that achieving greater international recognition and attracting significant investment will depend on the industry's commitment to professionalism, accountability and continuous innovation.
